Withdrawing the Gaze Slowly

Vijnana Bhairava 120

Meaning · English

Rest the gaze on some one thing, then slowly draw it back. What remains is the knowing itself, together with the mind. That knowing, goddess, becomes a dwelling of emptiness.

Three words carry the verse. Drishti is the gaze, the seeing that reaches out toward things. Nivartayet means to turn back or withdraw, from a root for turning. Shunyalaya joins shunya, empty, with alaya, a dwelling, so it is a house with nothing in it. The plain sense goes clause by clause. Set your gaze on some object, any object. Then, slowly, take the gaze back from it. What is left is the knowing that was holding the object, and that knowing goes along with the mind. The mind is not thrown out or silenced. It stays with the knowing, and together they become an empty house. The doorway is the most ordinary act there is. Every look has an object and a knower. Withdraw the gaze gently and the object loosens while the knowing stays where it was. Nothing foreign is brought in. The moment of looking is opened from inside, and what was always behind the object shows as its own ground.

1. Sit or stand where you can see one plain object, such as a cup, a wall mark or a leaf. Let your eyes rest on it without staring. 2. Look at it for a few breaths until it is simply there. 3. Now draw your gaze back slowly, as if the looking were a thread you are winding in. Do not jerk it away. 4. Notice what is left once the gaze is back. That is the knowing, and the mind stays with it. 5. When a thought pulls you out, set your gaze on the object again and draw it back again. 6. Stop when the sitting feels done, or when you tire.

The tradition's account is that the mind moves only by going out to objects. When the gaze is drawn back, that movement stops, the support the mind leaned on drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. In practice, the first difficulty is usually the eyes. They either stay glued to the object or slide off into a blank glaze. The brow, the muscles around the eyes and the jaw tend to grip, and the grip eases as the looking softens. The verse names no breath, so it is left alone. The attention keeps wanting to follow the object or jump to a thought. Small signs it is working: the object looks thinner, its edges lose weight, and a short gap of quiet appears between looking and the next thought. The usual ways it goes wrong are pulling back too fast, so thoughts rush in to fill the space, drifting into drowsiness, and forcing a blankness that is only effort.
