Body Without Support

Vijnana Bhairava 119

Meaning · English

While things are being remembered and a place is seen, let the mind go. Making your own body without support, the lord spreads out.

Three words carry it. Nirādhāra is "without support": ādhāra is whatever holds something up, a base or prop, and the prefix takes it away. Here it is applied to your own body, felt as resting on nothing. Prabhu is "lord", the one who is able and prevails, here the awareness that is your real nature. Prasarati is "spreads out" or "extends". Now the clauses in order. Things are being recalled, and a place is in view. Those are two ordinary activities, one inward and one outward. At that moment the mind is told to let go, and the verse does not say of what. It means the grip the mind keeps on the remembered things and on the seen place. Then the body is made supportless, with nothing felt underneath it or holding it together. And the lord spreads out. Why this works as a doorway: the verse asks for no special state. It takes a moment of remembering and looking, which everyone has, and opens it from inside. The mind's holding and the body's felt support are what keep awareness shut in one spot. When both loosen, nothing is left to confine it, and it extends.

1. Sit where you can see a place: a room, a yard, a street. Let your eyes rest on it. 2. Let some things come back to memory without choosing them. Let them run. 3. Now let the mind go. Stop holding the memories and stop holding the place. 4. Feel your body as if it had no support. Do not look for the seat or the floor. 5. When the mind grips something again, let it go again, and return to the body without support. 6. Stop when the time you set is up.

The tradition's account: the mind moves by clinging to objects, remembered ones and seen ones. When that clinging drops, the support the body seems to give the knower drops with it. Awareness is left with nothing to lean on, so it knows itself and spreads out as the lord. What a sitter tends to notice: at first the mind lets go of one thing only to take hold of another, and the memory comes back dressed differently. The body is the harder part. Weight keeps announcing itself through the seat, the feet and the back of the neck, and it is easy to mistake bracing for releasing. Small signs of it working: the edges of the body get vague, the place in view stops being a picture and is just there, and the remembered things go on without being pulled at. Usual ways it goes wrong: forcing a floating feeling, going dull and calling it emptiness, or staring so hard at the place that the mind grips it again.
