Looking Down the Well
Vijnana Bhairava 115
Meaning · English
Standing above a well or some other great pit, look down into it. With a mind that builds no pictures or divisions, the mind dissolves at once, and this is plain to see.
Three words carry it. Kupa is a well and mahagarta a great pit, so the object is a deep hollow with no floor in view. Avikalpa is the mind without vikalpa, and vikalpa is the habit of cutting what you see into this and that and then naming and judging each piece. Citta-laya is the mind (citta) melting or settling out (laya). Read clause by clause: you stand above a deep hollow, you look down into it, and you let no thought-construction form about it. Then the mind dissolves at once, and the text says it is sphuta, plainly visible, not a guess. The doorway works because a deep pit gives the eye nothing to grip. There is no object to name, compare or plan around. The ordinary act of looking is already happening, and the pit simply removes what the mind usually holds onto while it looks. What is left is looking without the commentary. Nothing foreign is brought in. The moment of staring into a drop is opened from inside until the mind's own busy-ness has no footing.
1. Find a well, a deep shaft, or a steep drop you can look into safely. Stand where the ground is firm and your footing is sure. 2. Look down into the hollow. Let your eyes rest on the depth without searching for the bottom. 3. Name nothing. When a thought about what it is, how deep it is, or what might happen starts to form, let it go and keep looking. 4. If the mind wanders off, bring the eyes back to the depth. Do not argue with the wandering. 5. When the mind has gone quiet, stay with the plain seeing for a while without grabbing at it. 6. Stop when the looking tires or the footing feels uncertain. Step back slowly.
The tradition's account: the mind lives by moving from one object to the next and fixing on each. A pit with no visible bottom offers nothing to fix on, so the movement stops. With the support gone, the mind dissolves, and awareness is left knowing itself without a thing to rest on. What a sitter tends to notice: the eyes try at first to find a bottom, a shape, a detail, and the mind supplies a story about falling or depth. The gaze softens when that search is let go. The edges of the view may feel less sharp, and the stream of inner talk may thin or stop for a moment. Common ways it goes wrong: staring hard, which only tenses the face; thinking about emptiness instead of looking; fear taking over because the stance is unsafe; or grabbing at the quiet when it comes, which ends it. The signs it is working are small: a pause in the commentary, a stillness in the body, a sense of simply seeing.
