Closing the Two Doors

Vijnana Bhairava 114

Meaning · English

Draw the two ears inward, and the lower opening likewise. Resting on what has no vowel in it, you enter Brahman, the one that has always been.

Three words carry the verse. Saṃkoca means a drawing together, a contraction. It is said of the ears and of the lower opening, adhodvāra, which is adhas, below, and dvāra, door. So the body has doors, and two of them are drawn shut. The third word is sanātana, from sanā, always. It describes Brahma as what was there before the sitting began. The clauses run in order. Draw in the ears. Do the same at the lower door. Hold attention on the vowelless, a sound with no vowel and no shape for the mind to grab. Then you enter Brahma. The text does not say you make it or reach it. You enter what already stands. The logic is Bhairava's answer to the question put to him. Nothing is added to the ordinary moment. Hearing is always pulling attention outward, and the body has a low opening that holds attention downward. Draw both in and little is left to follow. The attention has only the vowelless to rest on, and the verse treats that as the way in.

1. Sit upright in a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. 2. Draw your attention in at both ears, as if closing them from inside. Do not push with your hands. 3. Gently draw in the lower opening as well. Keep your jaw and shoulders loose. 4. Rest attention on what has no vowel in it, a sound with no shape. If a word or picture forms, let it go and come back. 5. When the mind wanders, return to the same place without scolding yourself. 6. Stop when the effort turns to strain. Release both doors and sit a moment longer.

The tradition's account runs like this. Attention normally leaves through the senses and the lower openings. Close two of the doors and the mind's movement slows. The support it leaned on drops away, and what is left is awareness knowing itself, which the text names Brahma. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. Drawing the ears in is mostly a matter of attention, and it takes a few tries to find. The lower contraction is easy to overdo. Held hard, it pulls the jaw and shoulders tight and the mind goes to the effort instead. The room's sounds do not disappear. They seem to sit further off, and the hum of the body can come forward. The vowelless is the hard part. The mind keeps trying to turn it into a word or picture. A small sign it is working is a stretch where nothing is being said inside. The usual failures are straining, drifting into daydream, and mistaking dullness for stillness.
