Meaning · English
Whoever does not keep turning the wheel set in motion here, living in wrong, delighting only in the senses, lives in vain, Arjun.
Three words carry the verse. Chakram is a wheel or cycle, and here it means the round of giving and receiving that Krishna has just described: food, rain, sacrifice, duty. Agha-ayuh is a life of harm or wrong, a life lived at a cost to others. Indriya-aramah means taking pleasure only in the senses, with the senses as a garden one strolls in for one's own enjoyment. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person who receives from this wheel and never turns it in return lives mogham, in vain, or emptily. The plain sense: everything a person eats, drinks and inherits arrives through the work of others and of nature. Someone who only consumes has broken the circle at their own point. Krishna gives the reason through the verses before it: the world runs on exchange, so taking without giving leaves a life with no purpose beyond itself. Arjuna is being asked to act, not to withdraw. Shankara reads the wheel as the Vedic duties laid down for each person, and the one who skips them as living in sin. Ramanuja reads it as service offered to the Lord, which keeps the world going. Madhva stresses that the duties are to be done as worship of Vishnu.
A water wheel at a mill turns because the stream pushes it, and in turning it lifts water and grinds grain for the village. One person who stands on the wheel, takes the grain and stops it from moving jams the whole mill. The wheel is the round of giving and receiving, and the jam is a life that only takes.
1. Tonight at dinner, name three people or things that brought this meal to your plate: a farmer, a driver, rain, whoever cooked. 2. Choose one small thing you can give back this week, such as washing the dishes, helping a neighbour carry bags, or calling someone who is alone. 3. Do it without announcing it. 4. At the end of the week, notice whether the day felt different when you had given something, however small.
A woman in her late thirties comes home after a long day and sinks onto the sofa. Her phone, the snacks and the next episode are all within reach. Her mother has left two messages, and a neighbour had asked for a lift to the clinic. She feels the pull of pure comfort. The verse, as Krishna gives it to Arjuna, would turn her attention first to what she has already received today: the meal someone cooked, the road someone mended, the wage that arrived. Then it asks what part of the circle is hers to turn. She returns the call and offers the lift, then rests, and the rest is easier for it. Ordinary experience bears out that a day spent only on one's own comfort tends to feel thin by the end of it, while a day with some giving in it feels fuller. The verse does not say rest is wrong, and it does not ask anyone to exhaust themselves for others. It does not cure tiredness, loneliness or grief, and someone who is ill or drained should look after their health first, with a doctor's help where needed.
