Bhagavad Gita 3.15

Meaning · English

Know that duties are manifested in the Vedas, and the Vedas are directly manifested from the Imperishable God. Therefore the all-pervading Lord is eternally established in sacrifice.

Krishna links three things in a chain. Karma means action, here the duties laid down for a person. Brahma appears twice with two senses: first the Vedas, the sacred word, then the Lord, the all-pervading one. Akshara means what does not decay, the Imperishable, and Krishna says the Vedas come directly from it. Yajna means sacrifice, an act offered up instead of kept for oneself. The plain sense is that duties are written in the Vedas, the Vedas come from God, so God is present in the offered act. Krishna gives this reason because the previous verses claim that duty keeps the world turning, and Arjuna could ask where duty gets its authority. The answer is that it is no human invention. It traces back to the Imperishable. Krishna asks Arjuna to know this: an act done as an offering is not a lesser thing than worship, because it is where the Lord is established. The commentators read the chain differently. Shankara takes the Imperishable as the Supreme Self itself, from which the Veda came. Ramanuja reads the first Brahma as the body or nature, and the Imperishable as the individual self, behind which stands the Lord. Madhva stresses that the Lord is both revealed by the Vedas and served in the sacrifice.

Water from a kitchen tap looks like a small household fact. Follow the pipe back through the wall, the street and the main line, and it ends at a reservoir that never ran dry because of one house. The tap is the offered duty, the pipe is the Vedas, and the reservoir is the Imperishable present at the end of each ordinary act.

1. Pick one routine task today that you usually rush, such as washing dishes, filing a form or feeding a pet. 2. Before starting, pause for ten seconds and name who or what the task serves. 3. Do it at an even pace, without checking your phone, until it is finished. 4. Afterwards, note whether the task felt different from the same task yesterday. Write one line if you like.

A woman gets up at five to pack lunch boxes for her children and her husband. She is tired, the kitchen is cold, and the task feels like one more thing in a long list. Krishna's words offer her a different way to see the same hour. The task has a source and a purpose behind it, and he says the Lord is established in work done as an offering. Step by step, the chopping and the packing stay exactly as they were. What changes is what the hands are doing: they are no longer just clearing a chore but passing something on to people she loves, and in Krishna's teaching to the one who stands behind them. Ordinary experience agrees that work felt as pointless drags, while work felt as given lightens a little. The teaching does not make the morning shorter, repay a debt or cure a poor night's sleep. If the tiredness is a sign of illness, a doctor is still the right person to see.
