Food, Rain, and Duty
Bhagavad Gita 3.14
Meaning · English
From food, living beings subsist. From rains, the production of food grains. From the performance of sacrifice, rain becomes possible. And sacrifice is born of prescribed duties.
Krishna lays out a chain of four links and tells Arjuna that each one rests on the next. Beings live on food. Food comes from rain. Rain comes from yajna. Yajna comes from karma. Three words carry the weight. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made for something beyond oneself; the word points to giving, not taking. Karma here means prescribed duty, the work that falls to a person by their place and role. Parjanya means rain, the water that arrives from outside and that no one produces alone. Krishna's point is that life is held up by a long line of gifts, and that duty done as an offering is where the line begins. This answers the worry behind the earlier verses: why should anyone give before taking? Because nothing a person eats was made by that person alone. Each clause is a step on one road, from the plate back to the work. The commentators read the chain differently. Shankara takes yajna as the Vedic ritual, performed by the sacrificer and priests through their action. Ramanuja takes the chain as the order the Lord has set to sustain all beings, with duty as worship. Madhva reads every offering as finally directed to Vishnu.
A line of neighbours passes buckets hand to hand toward a burning shed. The water reaches the fire only because each person takes the bucket and lets go of it again. If one person keeps the bucket, the line stops. Life's supply works like that line: food, rain and duty are hands, and each passes on what it receives.
1. At your next meal, before the first bite, pause for ten seconds and name three people or things the food passed through: soil, rain, a farmer, a driver, a cook. 2. Pick one small duty you usually do grudgingly, such as washing dishes or answering a message. Do it today as something given, not something owed. 3. Before bed, note one thing you received today that you did nothing to earn, and one thing you passed on to someone.
A mother stands at the stove in the evening, stirring dal while rain taps the window. She is tired, and the meal feels like one more demand on her. Then she follows the pot backwards. The lentils were grown in a field that needed water. Someone harvested them, someone drove them to a shop, someone weighed them out. Her stirring is the last link of a long chain of work, and the dal reaches her family through it. Seen this way, her small duty is a place where a larger supply comes to rest. Krishna's chain says the same: beings live on food, food on rain, rain on sacrifice, sacrifice on duty. Ordinary experience confirms the visible part, that food depends on weather and on many people's labour, and that a meal is rarely anyone's work alone. The text's claim that offerings bring rain is its own teaching, given as it stands. The limit is plain. Seeing the chain does not fill an empty pot, ease her tiredness or replace rest and help when she needs them.
