Content Within Oneself

Bhagavad Gita 3.17

Meaning · English

But the person who rejoices in the self, is satisfied in the self, and is content in the self alone: for such a one, no duty exists.

Three words carry the verse. Rati is delight, the way a person delights in a favourite song. Tripti is the fullness after a meal, when nothing more is wanted. Santosha is contentment, a settled ease. Krishna puts all three in the same place: the self, the atma. Karya, the word for duty, is what is still to be done, what is owed. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person whose joy, fullness and contentment all rest in the self has nothing left to be done for their own sake. The reason follows from the verses around it. Duties and actions are driven by wanting: something is missing, so we go and fetch it. Where nothing is missing, that driving need drops away. Krishna is not praising idleness. He describes a person who is complete, and he goes on to say that such a person still acts. Shankara reads this as the knower of the Self, for whom no duty remains as a means to anything. Ramanuja reads it as the person who has come to see the self through disciplined action, and who goes on acting as a settled way of living. Madhva reads the self-delight as delight in the Supreme, so that contentment rests in God. All three agree on the picture Krishna draws: one whose satisfaction is not borrowed from outside.

A pond fed by a spring underneath stays full through a dry summer, while a pond that waits for rain sinks with every hot week. Such a person is the spring-fed pond: their fullness rises from below and does not depend on what arrives from outside.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with your phone in another room. Notice what you reach for first, and what you feel is missing. 2. Once today, finish a small task, such as washing the dishes or answering a message, and do not check for thanks or a reply. Notice the pull to check. 3. Before sleep, recall one moment from the day when you wanted nothing added. Say it to yourself in a single sentence.

A railway clerk retires after thirty-one years. On the first morning he wakes at six, as always, and finds no file waiting and no one expecting him. He sits on the verandah with his tea and feels a restless emptiness. The verse would change that morning in steps. First, he sees that the restlessness comes from work having been where his sense of worth sat, and that the tea, the light and the quiet are not lacking anything. Second, he notices what he enjoys when nobody is asking anything of him, such as reading, walking or sitting with his wife. Third, whatever he takes up afterwards is chosen from fullness, not to fill a hole. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who acts only to be rewarded or noticed tires quickly when the reward stops. The verse does not promise that this morning will feel easy. It does not remove the grief of leaving a long working life, and it does not replace a doctor if the low mood deepens and stays.
