The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3 · Work Done for the World
Acting Without Needing Anything
Bhagavad Gita 3.18
Meaning · English
For that person there is no gain in duty done, and none in duty left undone, here in this world. Among all living beings there is no one on whom he must depend for any need.
Three words carry it. Krita is what has been done, a duty discharged. Akrita is the same word with a negative, a duty left undone. Artha is a purpose, something gained or needed. Vyapashraya is leaning on another, the way a roof leans on a beam. Krishna is describing the person from the verse before, the one who rejoices in the self and is content there. For that person, doing the duty adds no gain, and leaving it undone costs no gain, anywhere in this world. Nor does he need any living being to hand him something he lacks. The reason is in the previous verse: what people usually chase through action, such as praise, security or a sense of being enough, he already has within. His work is not a purchase, so nothing is owed to him and nothing is owed by him. Arjuna is looking for a reason to avoid the fight, and could hear this as permission to drop his duty. Krishna is describing a freedom from need, not a freedom from work. Shankara reads it as speaking of the knower of the self, for whom no action is required. Ramanuja reads the same person as one who reaches this state through the discipline of action and goes on acting. Madhva reads the freedom as freedom from desire for reward, with the work offered to God.
A spring at the edge of a village fills the stone trough all day. It does not wait for thanks before running, and it does not dry up when no one comes to drink. The water is simply there. The person Krishna describes acts like that spring: he gives out of fullness, so the work needs no payment and no audience.
1. Pick one small duty today that nobody will notice, such as washing the cups or answering a message you were not asked to answer. 2. Do it slowly and completely, then tell no one. 3. Afterwards, spend a minute noticing whether you wanted a word of thanks, and how strong the wish was. 4. Repeat once this week with a task you would normally skip, and notice whether anything was missing once it was done.
A retired teacher tutors the girl next door every evening for free. Tonight the girl's mother walks past without a word, and the teacher feels the old sting of being overlooked. In Krishna's teaching, the teacher can ask a plain question at that moment: what was the lesson for? If it was to be thanked, the evening has failed. If it was to teach, it is already complete. The sting can be felt and then set down, because the lesson never depended on the mother. Tomorrow the teacher sits down again and the work is the same. Ordinary experience confirms that work done for applause leaves a person hungry for the next round. The verse does not promise that the sting will vanish, or that being overlooked stops hurting. It does not say that people need no one, and it is not a rule for grief or illness, where leaning on others and on a doctor is simply sensible. It describes the state of one who is content within.
