Duty That Leads Beyond
Bhagavad Gita 3.19
Meaning · English
Therefore, always do the work that is yours to do, without attachment. A person who works without attachment reaches the Supreme.
Three words carry this. Asakta means unattached, from a root for clinging or sticking, like a burr on cloth. Karya means what ought to be done, the task that falls to you. Param means the highest, the Supreme. Krishna tells Arjuna to do his proper work, and to do it constantly, with no clinging to how it turns out or what it brings him. The word 'therefore' matters. Krishna has just said that no action adds to a person and no neglect takes from him, so nothing the work earns is worth grasping. What is left is the work itself, done because it is the task in front of him. The promise follows: a person who works this way reaches the Supreme. Work, then, is not what keeps him from the goal. It is the road, as long as the clinging is left out of it. Shankara reads this as action that cleans the mind and prepares it for knowledge, which then frees. Ramanuja reads it as the work itself, done without attachment, bringing the seeker to the Supreme. Madhva stresses that work offered to the Lord is what leads there. All three keep Arjuna at his task.
A potter at the wheel holds the clay steady and shapes the pot with both hands, not watching the market. When the pot is done, he lifts it off and starts the next. The wheel is the duty, the steady hands are the lack of clinging, and the pot is whatever the work becomes.
1. Pick one task today that is plainly yours: dishes, a report, a call you owe someone. 2. Before you begin, name the result you keep wanting from it, such as thanks, praise or a good outcome. Set it aside for the length of the task. 3. Work for ten or fifteen minutes with your attention on the next small step only. 4. When your mind runs ahead to how it will be received, notice it and return to the step. 5. Afterward, note whether the task felt lighter or heavier than usual.
A tailor is stitching a wedding blouse that must be ready tonight. Her mind keeps jumping ahead: will the bride's mother find fault, will the family pay on time, will they send others her way. Her stitches slow, and her shoulders tighten. The verse would change the moment in small steps. First she sees that the work in front of her is the seam, not the verdict. She brings her eyes back to the cloth and does the next stitch properly. When the worry returns, she names it and goes back again. By night the blouse is finished with her full care, whatever the family says of it. Ordinary experience confirms one part of this: a mind busy with the outcome has less attention left for the work. The verse does not promise that the family will be pleased, that she will be paid, or that the worry will never come. Krishna's promise is about where steady, unattached work leads, not about this evening's reward.
