From the unborn, nothing is born. For one who claims this, there is no example at all. And if the born gives birth to the born, no settled order can ever be reached.

Gaudapada is answering a rival who says the world really comes into being. He gives two words to work with. Ajata means unborn, from a, not, and jan, to be born. Vyavastha means a settled order, a place where the chain of causes comes to rest. He takes the rival's two options in turn. First option: something that is truly unborn, like the self or ultimate reality, gives rise to a world. Then show a case. No one has ever seen the unborn produce anything. An unborn thing never starts, so it has nothing to start from. Every example offered is of something already born making something else, which assumes the point in dispute. Second option: the born gives birth to the born. Then ask what gave birth to the first one, and to the one before it. The chain has no beginning, so it never settles. The question it answers is how a world could arise at all. Gaudapada's reply is that neither road holds. Shankara reads this as the pressure that pushes the listener to the teaching of non-birth. The same method of testing cause appears in Nagarjuna's work, and the Buddhist thinkers of his day, so the reasoning is shared ground. It asks the listener to test any claim of origin by looking for a real example.

Picture a line of people passing buckets to put out a fire, each handing to the next. Ask who filled the first bucket. If the answer is the person before, the line never starts. If it is someone who never had a bucket, nothing could have been passed. Both answers leave the fire unexplained.

1. Choose one ordinary thing today, a habit, a mood, or a worry, and ask where it began. 2. Trace it back one step at a time, writing each cause on paper for five minutes. 3. Notice where the chain either runs on without a first link or stops at something you cannot explain. 4. Sit quietly for one minute with that gap, without filling it.

A man stands at his kitchen counter at midnight, trying to work out why he lost his temper with his daughter at dinner. He blames the late meeting. The meeting was late because of a delayed report, which was delayed because a colleague fell ill. He keeps going back, and every answer needs another answer behind it. Finally he sees that he can follow the chain as far as he likes and it never arrives at a first cause he can point to. The verse puts that experience into words: tracing origins for the born leads to no settled place, and Gaudapada's teaching is that this is where the idea of birth itself gets questioned. In that moment, the man could stop hunting for the one guilty link, and simply see how the evening ran. Ordinary experience does confirm that a hunt for a single cause often fails. The verse does not say his temper was fine, and it does not excuse the harm. It also does not replace an apology, or help from a doctor if his anger is constant.
