For one who holds that the cause itself is the effect, the cause itself must be born. What is born, how can it be unborn? What is divided, how can it be lasting? If the effect is no different from the cause, then for you the effect is unborn. But if the effect is born, then how can your cause be fixed?

Four words carry it. Karana is the cause, from kri, to make: the maker-side of any happening. Karya is the effect, what is made. Aja is unborn, a-ja, from jan, to be born. Bhinna is split or divided, from bhid, to break. Gaudapada is answering a rival who says the cause itself turns into the effect. The first lines test that. If the cause is the effect, and the effect is born, then the cause is born too, and it can no longer be called unborn. If it divides into many things, how can it be lasting? The second half turns the question around. Suppose the rival says the effect is no different from the cause. Then, for him, nothing new appeared, so the effect is unborn. Yet the effect is plainly born; we watch it arrive. So his cause cannot be fixed either. Whichever way he answers, his claim works against itself. Gaudapada teaches this because his own teaching is that nothing is ever born. He shows that those who believe in birth cannot hold their own account together. Shankara reads such lines as arguments built from the opponent's own premise. Testing cause and effect this way also resembles the method of Nagarjuna and the Buddhist thinkers of his time, though Gaudapada uses it for the unborn. It asks the listener to see that "this made that" is harder to hold than it sounds.

Dough rises in a warm bowl, then goes into the oven and comes out a loaf. If the loaf is only the dough, the dough has not stayed what it was. It changed, and it is gone. A cause that turns into its effect cannot also remain a steady, unchanging cause.

1. Tonight, pick one small thing that changed today: a mood, a spill, a late bus. 2. Ask what caused it, and write down your first answer in one line. 3. Check the answer two ways. Is it just "how things are", a cause that never moves? Or is it something outside that itself needed a cause? 4. Notice how quickly the neat answer loosens. Stay with that loosening for a minute, without hurrying to a new answer.

A woman stands at the sink after her father snapped at everyone over dinner. She wants one cause. "He is just like that" feels solid. Then she remembers he slept badly and his knee hurt, and that answer slips. The verse presses on exactly that wish. If anger is simply who he is, it should always look the same, yet tonight it came and will pass. If it came from the bad night, then the bad night needs its own cause, and so on back. A single fixed cause explains less than it promises. Gaudapada draws a larger conclusion from this, that birth itself will not hold together as an idea. A listener can begin with the small one: ordinary experience shows that a person's moods have many shifting sources, and the first tidy story is rarely the whole one. Seeing this lets her hold the evening more loosely and ask a kinder question. It does not tell her whether to speak to him, and it does not take away the sting of being snapped at.
