The story · English

Once, the cowherds of Vraja, led by Nanda, set out eagerly on a festival pilgrimage to the gods. They traveled to the Ambika forest, where they bathed in the waters of the Sarasvati river. With deep devotion, they offered worship to the great Lord Pashupati and the Goddess Ambika. To ensure the gods were pleased, the cowherds distributed gifts of cows, gold, clothing, honey, and honey-rice to the Brahmins. After drinking water from the banks of the Sarasvati and observing their vows, Nanda, Sunanda, and their companions spent the night in that auspicious forest.

A massive python, driven by extreme hunger, happened upon the sleeping Nanda and suddenly swallowed him. Terrified, Nanda cried out loudly, 'Krishna! Krishna! This great serpent is swallowing me, dear son; save me, who have taken refuge in you!' Hearing these screams, the other cowherds jumped up in alarm. Seeing Nanda trapped in the serpent's jaws, they panicked and began striking the snake with burning torches. Even as the flames burned the creature, the python refused to let go of its prey, holding Nanda tight despite the assault.

Seeing the struggle, Krishna stepped forward and gently touched the serpent with His feet. The touch of the Lord’s feet instantly destroyed the snake's impurity, and it shed its reptilian skin to reveal the form of a celestial Vidyadhara, adorned with golden garlands. Krishna asked him, 'Who are you, who possess such wonderful beauty? How did you come to be trapped in such a loathsome form?' The man bowed and replied, 'I am Sudarshana. Because I was proud of my beauty, I mocked the deformed sages of the Angirasa clan, and they cursed me to this state.'

Sudarshana explained that the curse was actually a mercy, for it ensured he would be touched by the feet of the Teacher of the World. 'I am now free from the curse,' he said, 'and I surrender to you, the remover of fear for those who seek refuge.' After circling Krishna and offering his respects, Sudarshana ascended back to the heavens, and Nanda was released from the serpent's mouth. The amazed cowherds returned to Vraja, sharing the story of Krishna's divine power with everyone they met.

Later, Krishna and Rama spent a night in the forest with the women of Vraja. As they sang beautiful songs, the women were so enchanted they fell into a swoon. Just then Shankhachuda, an attendant of Kubera, arrived and drove the women off northward as they cried out for Krishna and Rama. The brothers ran after him holding sal trees. Seeing the brothers close behind, he let the women go and fled in terror; Balarama stayed to guard them while Krishna gave chase. With a single blow of His fist, Krishna struck off Shankhachuda's head along with its brilliant crest-jewel. Then, as the women watched, Krishna lovingly gave the shining jewel to His elder brother Balarama.
