The Songs of the Gopis

Bhagavata Purana 10.35 · read aloud in the app

The story · English

When Krishna went to the forest, the gopis found their hearts following him. They spent their days in a state of longing, singing of his divine play to soothe their sorrow. They spoke of his beauty—how he rests his left cheek on his left arm, his eyebrows dancing, as he holds his flute to his lips, his delicate fingers moving over its holes. When he plays, they said, the women who ride the sky in chariots with the siddhas hear it and are filled with wonder and shame; overcome by love, they swoon, not noticing their girdles slip loose.

They describe the magic of his flute. When Mukunda plays, the cows of Vrindavan and the wild deer are mesmerized, standing still like painted pictures, their ears alert and eyes half-closed in a trance. The gopis recall how, dressed like a wrestler in peacock feathers, flower clusters, coloured minerals and leaves, he calls the cows, sometimes with Balarama and the cowherd boys. Then the rivers stop flowing. Like the gopis, who count their own merit small, they long for the dust of his lotus feet carried on the breeze; their wave-arms tremble with love and their waters grow still. To them, he is like the primordial being as he roams the forest, praised by his companions, and calls with his flute the cows grazing on the mountain slopes.

Nature itself seems to respond to him. The trees and vines of the forest, laden with flowers and fruit, bow low as if revealing Vishnu within themselves, and, thrilled with love, pour down streams of honey. Bees hum loudly around his forest garland, drunk on the divine scent of its Tulasi, and he honours their song by putting his flute to his lips. Even the cranes and swans of the lakes are captivated; they come to him and worship Hari in silence, eyes closed, minds stilled. When he plays on the mountain slopes with Balarama, a garland on his head, his flute awakens a joy that fills the entire universe.

The heavens are not immune to his charm. A cloud, fearing to offend so great a one, rumbles gently in accompaniment and showers its friend with flowers, shading him like an umbrella. The great gods, led by Indra, Shiva, and Brahma, bow their heads in confusion and awe, unable to fathom the essence of his music. The gopis describe how his feet, marked with the flag, thunderbolt, lotus and goad, ease the ground of Vraja where the cows' hooves hurt it. They admit that as he walks by and his playful glances stir their love, they stand motionless like trees, forgetting whether their hair and clothes are even in place.

They remember him counting his cows, his Tulasi garland fragrant, and singing as he rests his arm on the shoulder of a loving companion. They speak of how he plays by the Yamuna, adorned with a garland of kunda jasmine, surrounded by the cowherd boys and the cattle, delighting his loving friends. They recall the elders of Vraja bowing to his feet at the end of the day as he leads the herd home. Even his playful glances and the gold earrings adorning his soft cheeks are etched in their minds. In this way, the women of Vraja found peace, their hearts entirely absorbed in the stories of Krishna.
