The story · English

One day, a demon named Arishta arrived in Gokula in the form of a massive bull. He was a terrifying sight; his hooves shook the very earth as he stomped, and he plowed the ground with his feet. With his tail raised and his horns sharp, he let out a roar that struck fear into the hearts of everyone. The roar was so harsh that the cows and the people were paralyzed with terror, and both cows and women even suffered miscarriages from the sheer fright. Seeing those sharp horns and the demon's wide, staring eyes, the gopis and gopas trembled with fear, and the animals fled from the village in panic.

In their desperation, the people cried out 'Krishna, Krishna!' and went to Govinda for shelter. Krishna saw the terror gripping Gokula and stepped forward. He called out to Arishta, 'Why have you come here to frighten these innocent cowherds and animals, you wicked soul?' He slapped his arms in defiance, making a loud sound that further provoked the demon. Arishta, blinded by rage, charged at Krishna like a thunderbolt released by Indra, his horns pointed forward and his eyes wide with fury.

Krishna did not flinch. As the bull rushed him, Krishna seized him by the horns and pushed him back eighteen paces, just as a powerful elephant pushes its opponent. Arishta tried to recover and charged again, breathing heavily in his anger. But Krishna caught him once more by the horns, pressed him down with his foot, and threw him to the ground. He squeezed the demon as if he were wringing a piece of wet cloth, then tore off one of his horns and struck him with it. Arishta fell, vomiting blood and passing urine and dung, and died in agony. The gods rained flowers upon Krishna in celebration.

After the death of Arishta, the sage Narada visited Kansa and revealed that the sons of Vasudeva—Krishna and Balarāma—were living safely in Nanda's home in Gokula. This news sent Kansa into a rage. He first wanted to kill Vasudeva, but Narada held him back. Knowing that Vasudeva's two sons were his death, Kansa bound Vasudeva and his wife in iron chains. As soon as Narada left, he sent Keshi to kill Balarāma and Krishna. He then summoned his ministers and powerful wrestlers, including Chanura and Mushtika, ordering them to prepare for a great tournament where the two boys would be lured and slaughtered in front of the public.

Kansa then called for Akrura and took him by the hand. 'O generous one,' Kansa said, 'go to Nanda in Gokula and bring those two boys here quickly. They are the cause of my death. I will have them trampled by my elephant, Kuvalayapida, and if they escape, killed by my wrestlers. Once they are gone, I will kill Vasudeva, my father Ugrasena, and my uncle Devaka. Then this earth will be clear of thorns, and I shall rule the world with the help of my guru Jarasandha and my friends Shambara, Naraka, and Bana.' Akrura replied that the plan was wise, though fate alone decides success or failure; still, he would carry out the order. Having given these orders, Kansa and Akrura returned to their respective homes.
