The story · English

Sent by the tyrant Kansa, a demon named Keshi arrived in Nanda's village of Vraja. He took the form of a massive horse, his neighing so terrifying that it seemed to shake the very heavens. With a dark blue body like a storm cloud, wide eyes, and a gaping maw, he tore at the earth with his hooves, intending to destroy everything in Kansa's name. The people of Vraja were gripped by fear as the beast thundered through their lands. But Krishna, seeing the terror of his own people and the chaos in Gokula, stepped forward to meet the monster. He called out to the demon in a voice that roared like a lion, challenging Keshi to face him directly.

Keshi responded with a furious charge, his mouth open wide as if he intended to swallow the sky itself. He galloped toward Krishna with unstoppable speed and kicked at him with his legs. Krishna dodged the kick, seized the demon by the legs with both arms, swung him round and scornfully threw him a hundred bow-lengths away, then stood like the divine eagle Garuda over a serpent. Keshi came to, rose and lunged again in a rage, his mouth gaping. Krishna simply smiled and put his left arm into the demon's mouth, like a snake entering its hole. Keshi's teeth, touching that arm, fell out as if they had touched red-hot iron, and the Lord remained unhurt.

Inside the demon's throat, Krishna’s arm began to expand. As the arm grew, Keshi found his breath blocked and his strength failing. His eyes rolled in agony, and he began to sweat profusely, eventually collapsing onto the ground and releasing his waste in a final, wretched spasm. With a powerful movement, Krishna pulled his arm out of the demon's body, which had split open like a ripe cucumber. As the threat vanished, the gods in heaven showered the scene with blossoms. The sage Narada then came to Krishna, who had effortlessly ended the terror of the horse-demon, and spoke with him in private.

Narada spoke with deep devotion, acknowledging Krishna as the Supreme Soul, the witness of all beings, and the Lord of the Universe who had descended to earth to protect the virtuous and destroy the wicked. He told Krishna that Keshi's neighing had driven the terrified gods from heaven. Narada then prophesied the future victories of the Lord: the defeat of the wrestlers Chanura and Mustika, the fall of Kansa, the victory over the demon Naraka, and the recovery of the Parijata tree from Indra. He spoke of the liberation of Nṛga from a curse in Dwarka, the winning of the Syamantaka jewel together with a wife, and the eventual destruction of Paundraka and Dantavakra.

After Narada departed, Krishna returned to the joy of the cowherds. One day, grazing the cattle on the mountain slopes, the boys played hide-and-seek as thieves, guards and sheep. Vyomasura, son of Maya, disguised as a cowherd boy, played a thief and carried off the boys playing sheep one by one into a cave, sealing it with a massive rock, until only four or five boys were left. Krishna, knowing this, seized him as he carried the boys off, as a lion seizes a wolf. Vyomasura took his mountain-sized form but could not break free. Krishna held him with both arms, threw him to the ground and killed him like a sacrificial animal as the gods watched. Then he broke open the cave, rescued the cowherds, and returned home to Gokula.
