Akrura's Journey to Gokula

The story · English
After spending the night in Mathura, the wise Akrura climbed into his chariot and set out for Nanda's village in Gokula. As he travelled, his heart filled with a profound devotion for the lotus-eyed Lord. He began to wonder what great merit he had earned or what severe penance he had performed to deserve the chance to see Keshava. He felt that seeing the Divine was a rare gift, as unlikely as a person of low birth suddenly chanting the highest Vedic hymns. He feared that he was too insignificant for such a vision. Yet he hoped that even he would see Achyuta, for one carried off by the river of time sometimes reaches the shore.
Akrura felt that today his misfortune was destroyed and his birth had borne fruit, for he would bow before the lotus feet that yogis meditate on. He felt a strange gratitude toward Kansa; though the king's intentions were wicked, his command had become the instrument that would lead Akrura to the Divine. He imagined the Lord, who once destroyed the darkness of the world with the light of His nails, now living as a simple cowherd, His feet marked with saffron from the Gopis. He looked forward to seeing that beautiful face, those compassionate lotus eyes, and that gentle smile. The deer passing on his right told him he would surely see Mukunda's face.
He meditated on the mystery of the Infinite taking human form to relieve the burden of the earth. He thought of how the Lord, by His own light, dispelled ignorance and the illusion of difference, and was perceived as present in all bodies through their life-airs, senses and minds. Akrura longed to fall at those feet, hoping the Lord would place a lotus hand upon his head. It was the same hand that gives fearlessness to those who seek refuge, that received the offerings of Indra and Bali, and that eased the Gopis' weariness. He was sure that the all-seeing Achyuta, who saw his heart, would not take him for an enemy though he was Kansa's messenger. Instead He would embrace him as a dear friend, erasing all his sins with a single, joyful look.
As the sun dipped toward the horizon, Akrura reached Gokula. In the cow-settlement, he saw the Lord's footprints on the ground, marked with the lotus, the barley-grain, and the goad. Overwhelmed with emotion, his skin prickled and tears filled his eyes. He leaped from his chariot and rolled in that dust, crying, 'This is the dust of my Lord's feet!' Then he saw Krishna and Balarāma, who had gone to the evening milking of the cows. Krishna was dark-complexioned, dressed in yellow silks, while Balarāma was fair, dressed in blue. Both had broad shoulders and beautiful faces, their bodies fragrant with forest flowers and their eyes radiating kindness. Akrura threw himself at their feet in total surrender, unable to speak through his joy.
Krishna approached the humble Akrura and embraced him warmly. Balarāma also embraced him, took him by the hand and, with his younger brother, led him into the house. There Balarāma asked after his journey, offered him the best seat, washed his feet, and brought him the welcome offering of madhuparka and a cow. He massaged the tired guest and served him pure, plentiful food. After the meal, Balarāma gave him mouth-fresheners, fragrances and garlands. Nanda then asked how Akrura and his people managed to live under the cruel Kansa, like sheep with a butcher for a shepherd. He also asked whether they were safe from the king who had heartlessly killed his own sister Devaki's children. In this warm hospitality, Akrura finally found relief from the exhaustion of his journey.
