Cause and Effect Together
Gaudapada Karika 4.16
Meaning · English
If cause and effect arise in an order, you must show that order. If they arise at the same moment, they have no bond between them, like the two horns of a bull.
Three words carry the verse. Hetu is cause, from hi, to set in motion. Phala is fruit or effect, what ripens from the cause. Krama is order or sequence, the step-by-step line from first to next. The last word, asambandha, is no bond: a-, not, plus sambandha, a binding together. Gaudapada is speaking to an opponent who holds that things are really born from causes. He gives two options. Either the cause comes first and the effect after, and then the opponent must show the order. Or both arise at once. Then neither can make the other, just as a bull's right horn does not produce the left. They stand side by side and tie to nothing. Why teach this here? The fourth chapter argues that nothing is ever born, which is ajati. The usual objection is that cause and effect plainly work. Gaudapada does not wave this away. He asks the objector to say how it works, and tests each possibility. Shankara reads these verses as exposing a flaw in the idea of real causation, not as denying that everyday talk of causes is useful. Thinkers of his age, Nagarjuna among them, also pressed such arguments on cause, and the Buddhist and Advaita schools reached their own conclusions from them. The verse asks the listener to examine, not to accept: hold your own idea of cause up and see whether it stands.
Two sparks leave a fire in the same instant and fly off in the dark. Neither lit the other. Each simply appears beside the other. That is the picture of simultaneous cause and effect: two things together, with no one doing anything to the other.
1. Pick one small cause you trust, such as pressing a switch and the light coming on. Do it three times today. 2. Each time, watch for the gap. Does the light follow the press, or come with it? Notice how hard it is to find the exact seam. 3. Spend a minute at night writing one sentence: what did I actually see, and what did I add by saying 'because'?
A man stands at the kitchen tap at midnight, replaying an argument. He is sure his harsh word caused his sister's silence, and her silence caused his harshness, and he cannot say which began it. He feels trapped in a knot. The verse offers him a patient question: when I say 'because', what exactly am I pointing at? He might slow the memory down. Which came first, the word or the mood behind it? Where did the silence start? Often the neat line of cause and effect turns out to be a story laid over a tangle, and seeing that loosens the grip of blame a little. Ordinary experience agrees that we tidy events into causes after the fact, and that the tidy version can be wrong. The limit is plain. The verse does not tell him whether to apologise, and it does not settle the hurt between them. It is also no reason to ignore real causes where they matter, such as a medicine for a fever or a doctor's advice about a pain that will not ease.
