If the cause is known only from the effect that is being born, then the cause is not yet established. How will a cause that is not established bring forth an effect? And if the cause is proved by the effect, and the effect by the cause, which of the two stood finished first, so that the other's proof could lean upon it?

Three words carry the argument. Hetu is the cause, from hi, to set going. Phala is the effect, literally fruit. Siddhi is being established, being settled as real. Apeksha is leaning on something, depending on it. Gaudapada speaks to an opponent who says the world is really produced, that causes truly give birth to effects. He first says that if a cause is known only through the effect coming from it, then until that effect arrives the cause is not settled. A cause that is not settled cannot do any producing. So how does it make the fruit? Then he turns it round. Suppose the opponent answers that each proves the other: the cause is proved by the effect, and the effect by the cause. Then one of them must have been complete first, because each leans on the other for its proof. A thing that waits on another to be settled cannot be the one that stood ready. Neither can go first, so the pair has no starting place. He teaches this to show that the idea of real birth cannot be held together. That is why the fourth part keeps returning to ajati, no birth at all. Shankara reads such arguments as meant to dissolve the opponent's belief, not to build a rival one. Nagarjuna, the Buddhist teacher, pressed similar questions about causes, and the karika shares that line of reasoning. The listener is asked to test the question for himself, and to notice that no answer comes.

Two men lean against each other, back to back, and both are standing. Ask which one is holding the other up and neither can answer, because remove either and both fall. Cause and effect, each proved by the other, stand like that: neither is the one that was standing first.

1. Tonight, pick one small chain you tend to blame, such as being tired because you slept badly, or sleeping badly because you were tired. 2. Ask which truly came first. Spend two minutes tracing it back and write each link on paper. 3. Notice where the trail stops being clear, and where you simply pick a starting point to feel settled. 4. Say aloud, once, 'I cannot find the first link,' and see what happens to the urge to blame.

At a family dinner, two brothers are arguing about who started the quarrel. One says he only shouted because the other sneered. The other says he sneered because of a remark made last month. Each reply sends the search further back and settles nothing. The karika would change this moment in steps. First, the brothers notice that each has named a cause only by pointing at the result he is angry about. Second, they see that the cause was fixed by the effect and the effect by the cause, so neither is the first. Third, the search for the first culprit loses its grip, and the question left is what to do now, at this table. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired, hurt person can trace blame backward for hours without ever arriving. The text teaches this as part of its larger claim that nothing is truly born. It does not promise that the quarrel is resolved, that old wrongs stop mattering, or that an apology is no longer owed. Where a real harm was done, it still has to be spoken of and mended.
