Three Failures, One Conclusion

Gaudapada Karika 4.19

Meaning · English

Powerlessness, not-knowing, or the order broken: in every way the awakened have shown non-birth by these.

Three words carry the verse. Shakti is power, the capacity to do something, so a-shakti is a lack of it. Parijnana is knowing all the way round, so a-parijnana is not knowing how a thing happens. Krama is sequence, one step after another, and kopa is upset or breaking, so krama-kopa is a broken order. The last word, ajati, is non-birth: a is not, jati is birth, from jan, to be born. The verse says that whenever someone tries to explain how one thing truly gives birth to another, the explanation fails in one of three ways. The cause turns out to have no power of its own to produce. Or no one can say how the producing happens. Or the order of before and after falls apart. Gaudapada says the awakened, looking at every possible account, found one of these faults in each, and so pointed to non-birth. He is answering the common view that the world is made by causes. He does not offer a rival story of how it was made. He shows that the claim of birth cannot be held steadily. The commentators read this as an argument that leaves non-birth standing. The method of testing arising by its failures also appears in the Buddhist thinkers of his time, Nagarjuna among them. The verse asks the listener to check each account personally.

A locked door and three keys. The first key has no teeth and cannot turn. The second is a shape nobody can describe, so no one can tell whether it fits. The third works only if the door is already open. The door is the claim that a thing is born, and the three keys are the three failures.

1. Tonight, pick one small happening, such as a burnt dinner or a sour mood. Sit for five minutes with paper. 2. Write what you think caused it, then ask whether that cause had the power to do it alone. 3. Ask whether you actually know how it did so, step by step. 4. Ask which came first, and whether the order holds when you press on it. Notice where the explanation goes soft, and leave it there without solving it.

A mother sits at the kitchen table late at night after her son failed an exam. She runs through the reasons: the phone, the new school, the weeks she worked late, his friends. Each seems right for a moment. Then she presses on it. Could the phone alone have done this? Plenty of boys have phones. Does she truly know how it worked on him, step by step? And did the distraction come before the falling marks, or the marks before the distraction? Pressed, each reason loses its footing, and what remained was the plain fact of one bad result and one boy to talk to in the morning. That is the gentle use of the verse. It does not say the exam never happened, and it does not remove her worry. Where his marks, sleep or mood point to something deeper, a teacher or doctor should be asked. Ordinary experience confirms that blame traced at midnight rarely lands on a single clean cause. The text goes further and teaches that no birth is found at the end of the search.
