The example of seed and sprout is always the same as the thing it is meant to prove. A reason that is the same as what is to be proved cannot establish it. Not knowing what comes before and after lights up the unborn. For if a thing is truly born, why is its earlier state never grasped?

Three terms carry the argument. Drishtanta is the example, the familiar case a debater points to. Sadhya is what is to be proved. Ajati is non-birth, the claim that nothing is ever actually born. Gaudapada answers a opponent who says birth is real, because a sprout comes from a seed. He points out that the seed and sprout is itself a case of one thing being born from another. That is exactly what is in doubt, so the example assumes what it was brought to prove. A reason that needs the same proof as the claim proves nothing. Shankara reads it this way. The second half turns to what nobody can see. If a sprout were really born, we should be able to point to its beginning, the moment before it was and the moment after. We never catch that edge. We see seed, then sprout, and the birth between them is only inferred. Gaudapada says this ignorance of before and after is not a gap to be filled. It points toward ajati. His method resembles Nagarjuna's, who also took apart arguments about causes, though the schools differ on much else. The verse asks the listener to test an argument by asking whether its proof stands on anything other than its own claim.

A man doubts his kitchen scale and checks it by weighing a bag of rice on the same scale. It agrees with itself, so he is satisfied. The seed and sprout is that second weighing: it uses the very thing in question to vouch for itself.

1. Today, when someone gives you a reason for something, ask once in your head: does this reason already assume the answer? 2. Pick one belief of your own that feels obvious. Write the reason you hold it on a slip of paper. 3. Read the reason back. Note whether it stands on anything beyond the belief itself. Five minutes is enough.

A schoolteacher is marking an essay late in the evening. The student writes that the plan must be good because it is the best plan, and repeats it with growing confidence. The teacher feels half persuaded anyway. Gaudapada's point helps here. She can ask what the sentence offers apart from the claim itself, and find it offers nothing. Then she can write a plain question in the margin: what is the evidence that does not already assume this? The student now has something to work on, and the teacher is no longer swayed by tone. Ordinary experience confirms that a confident, repeated claim feels stronger than it is. The verse is Gaudapada's teaching about the unborn, and it is offered to the reader on his terms. It does not promise that the question will be answered, or that the student will agree. It does not settle a quarrel or replace a teacher who knows the subject. It teaches one skill: noticing when a proof borrows from what it is trying to prove.
