Lakshmi's Glance on Vishnu

Kanakadhara Stotram 1

Meaning · English

Like a bee on a budding tamala tree, her playful side-glance rests on thrilled Hari. May the glance of the goddess of good, holding all splendor, bring me good.

Lakshmi is not looking straight at Vishnu. She glances at him from the corner of her eye, half in play. Where her look lands, his skin prickles with joy and the small hairs stand up. The poet sees a dark tree dotted with buds, and a female bee drawn to it. He calls her the goddess of all that is good, and says her glance already holds every kind of plenty. So he asks that it fall on him too, and bring him good.

A shaft of afternoon sun comes through a window at a slant and falls on one spot of floor. Everything it touches turns warm and gold, while the rest stays as it was. The glance works like that: it comes sideways, and where it rests, things change. The poet is asking to be the spot it falls on.
