Love and Shyness Together
Kanakadhara Stotram 2
Meaning · English
Over and over her eyes go to Murari's face and return, love pulling, shyness holding, like a bee at a blue lotus. May the ocean-born one's gaze bring me fortune.
She is called innocent, someone with nothing guarded or calculated about her. Her eyes keep going to her husband's face and coming away again. Two pulls work on them at the same moment. Love draws them in, and bashfulness draws them back. The poet calls these repeated looks a garland, one glance strung after another. He compares her to a female bee hovering at a large dark lotus, which is his face. She is the one born from the ocean, and the poet asks her gaze to bring him prosperity.
Picture a newly married bride across a crowded room. She looks at her husband, catches his eye, drops her gaze to her plate, then looks up again a moment later. That back-and-forth is the whole verse. The looking away is not coolness. It is the same love, too shy to stay still.
