An Eye That Never Blinks

Kanakadhara Stotram 3

Meaning · English

Resting gladly on Mukunda, root of joy, whose eyes half-close, the unblinking eye of the serpent-reclining Lord's beloved, held still in its corner by love — may it bring me well-being.

Two pairs of eyes are being described, and they do opposite things. Vishnu, called Mukunda and the root of joy, has his eyes half-closed, the way someone's do when they are deeply content. Lakshmi's eyes do not close at all. She looks at him without blinking, the pupil and lashes held steady at the corner of her eye. That sidelong, steady look is held there by love. The poet asks that this same look bring him well-being.

Think of a parent watching a newborn sleep. The baby's eyes are shut, its face loose and calm. The parent sits close and hardly blinks, not wanting to miss one small breath. Vishnu is the one resting in contentment. Lakshmi is the one keeping watch, so taken up that blinking seems like a loss.
