Nyaya Sutras 1.2.18

Meaning · English

Jati is the counter-stand made by means of likeness or unlikeness alone: opposing an argument merely through ways things resemble each other, or ways they differ.

The sutra asks what is wrong with some objections that still sound sharp. For the Nyaya, a sound argument gives a reason and backs it with an example. Jati, literally 'what springs up', names a reply that springs up against such a reason using only likeness (sadharmya, sharing a feature) or unlikeness (vaidharmya, lacking one). Vatsyayana explains the pattern. If someone argues from likeness to an example, the objector answers with unlikeness. If someone argues from unlikeness, the objector answers with likeness, simply because it points the other way. Take an argument: 'Sound passes away, because it is produced, like a pot.' A jati reply: 'No, sound lasts, because it is intangible, like space.' It leans on a way sound is unlike the pot (the pot can be touched) and like space. The reply copies the shape of the argument. It never shows that its own feature really goes with its conclusion, and it never shows that the first reason fails. It sets one resemblance against another and stops there. For the Nyaya, that is why it is futile. It opposes the argument without refuting it.

1. Today, when you hear an objection that starts 'But X is just like Y', stop for ten seconds and name the one feature the two share. 2. Ask whether that shared feature actually brings about the conclusion, or only sits beside it. 3. Before you answer someone's argument this evening, check whether you are showing their reason fails or only offering a mirror-image comparison. 4. If it is only a mirror image, drop it, or look for a case where their reason holds and their conclusion does not.

Modern critical thinking has a close neighbour to jati in the false or weak analogy. Two things sharing a feature proves nothing unless that feature is relevant to the conclusion. Formal logic agrees with the Nyaya point. A counter-analogy does not defeat an argument. A counterexample does, because it shows the reason holding while the conclusion fails. Cognitive science helps explain why the move tempts people: much everyday reasoning runs on similarity, so a surface match feels like evidence. The Nyaya diagnosis holds up well here. What stays open is the hard part underneath: what makes a likeness relevant rather than accidental. That is a version of the problem of induction raised by Hume, and later sharpened by Nelson Goodman's puzzles about which properties we may project. Neither modern philosophy nor the Nyaya treats it as fully settled.
