No Moment for Knowing
Nyaya Sutras 2.1.8
Meaning · English
Perception and the other means of knowledge are not valid, because they cannot be established at any of the three times.
The question behind it: can the tools we use to know anything be trusted at all? Nyaya calls these tools pramanas, the means of valid knowledge, and counts four: perception, inference, comparison and testimony. This sutra gives a sceptic's answer, which Nyaya states only so it can refute it. The claim is that none of the four is valid, because none can be placed in time. Vatsyayana gives the reason in one line. A means of knowing must stand in some time-relation to the thing known: before it, after it, or together with it, and none of the three is possible. The sceptic's next sutras, 2.1.9 to 2.1.11, spell out why. If the knowing came first, there was nothing yet for it to grasp. If it came after, the thing was already settled without its help. If both arose together, every cognition would be fixed to its object at once, and our knowings could not come in sequence, as they plainly do. Put in our own words, a relation that fits no moment is no real relation. If the argument held, every claim to know anything would lose its footing.
Picture a light switch and a lamp. If you flip the switch before any bulb is fitted, nothing lights. If the lamp is already glowing when you flip it, the switch did nothing. If both happen at the same instant, you cannot say which caused which. The switch is the means of knowing, the glowing lamp is the thing known.
The nearest modern relative is the problem of the criterion: to show a method is reliable, you seem to need a reliable method already, which leads to a regress or a circle. Ancient Greek sceptics framed a similar trap, and it remains a live puzzle in epistemology. On timing, cognitive science sides partly with the sceptic's setup: perception lags its object, since the brain takes a short while to process a signal. Yet a delayed report can still be accurate, as a photograph taken a moment late still shows the scene. Philosophers have also argued that some causes act at the same moment as their effects, so 'together' need not rule out dependence. A sceptical argument that no means of knowing is valid must itself be known by some means, a tension modern critics of global scepticism also press.
