Denial Needs a Means

Nyaya Sutras 2.1.13

And because every means of knowledge is denied, the denial itself cannot stand.

Can a skeptic coherently claim that no way of knowing works? A pramana is a means of valid knowledge. The Nyaya counts four: perception, inference, comparison and testimony. The opponent has argued that none of them can work, because a means of knowing cannot come before, after, or at the same moment as what it knows. For the Nyaya, that sweeping denial undoes itself. To deny something is to claim to know it, and a claim to know needs a means. Vatsyayana spells out the trap. An argument offers a reason, and a reason convinces only if an example shows it working. Showing it working needs perception and the other means. If they are valid, the denial fails. If they are invalid, the example proves nothing. Either way the reason works against the very position it was meant to support. And if no example is offered, the reason was never shown to be a reason. So a total denial cannot be stated without relying on what it denies.

Picture someone laying a tape measure against a row of tape measures to show that every tape measure gives a wrong reading. If the tape in their hand is accurate, their claim is false. If it is not, their measurements show nothing. The skeptic denying all means of knowledge is holding that tape.

Modern philosophy calls this a self-refutation argument, or a performative contradiction: a claim that undercuts the conditions of its own assertion, like saying 'I know that nothing can be known.' Logicians broadly agree that such a claim, offered as knowledge, is incoherent, so the Nyaya point holds against a skeptic who asserts global doubt as a conclusion. It is weaker against skeptics who decline to assert anything. The Greek Pyrrhonists said they only report how things seem. Whether a skeptic can argue without committing to anything is still debated. The argument also has limits. It shows that some means of knowing must be trusted, not which ones, or how far. Cognitive science, which maps where perception misleads and where it holds, works inside exactly that remaining space.
