A Prayer for Two
Katha Upanishad 2.3.19
Meaning · English
May He guard the two of us together. May He nourish the two of us together. May we work with strength together. May what we have studied shine clearly for us. May we never turn against each other.
Three small words carry this prayer. Saha means together, and it opens the first three lines, so nothing here is asked for one person alone. Viryam is strength, the vigor to carry out what has been learned. Tejasvi means bright, as a flame is bright: the study is asked to be clear and alive, not dusty. The last line asks that the two never hate each other. Vidvish, the root of that word, means to be hostile, to turn away. Read plainly, it is a prayer spoken by a teacher and a student who have finished a hard teaching. They ask for protection, for what nourishes or delights them, for strength shared in the work, for knowledge that stays luminous, and for a bond that does not break. Yama has just taught Nachiketas about the inner Self. The reason for the prayer follows from that: knowledge given between two people can be ruined by pride, rivalry or resentment, and a clear mind does little good in a divided pair. Shankara reads it as a peace prayer closing the teaching, asking that the knowledge bear fruit and that no obstacle, quarrel included, come between teacher and student. The prayer asks the listener to want the shared good, not only a private one.
Two people carry a heavy wooden bed frame down a narrow staircase. It only moves if they lift in step, speak, and keep the same pace. If one pulls ahead or lets go in irritation, both are hurt. The prayer asks for that kind of step: shared strength, and no quarrel on the stairs.
1. Choose one person you work or live beside, a sibling, a spouse, a colleague. Today, sit or eat with them for ten unhurried minutes. 2. Before you begin, silently wish for the two of you: may we both be looked after, may we not turn against each other. 3. During the talk, notice the first moment you feel the urge to win a point. Let it pass and listen for one more sentence. 4. In the evening, note one thing you did together that went better because of it.
Two brothers sit at a table the week after their father's funeral, with the shop's account books open between them. One is tired and short-tempered; the other is already counting what he is owed. Yama's prayer would change that moment in small steps. First, it puts the word together ahead of anything else, so the books become a shared task and not a contest. Second, it asks for nourishment, and ordinary experience agrees that hunger and fatigue make people sharper and less fair, so eating something before the argument is a sensible part of the prayer. Third, it asks that the work be done with strength, meaning that each does his part fully instead of waiting for the other. Last, it asks that they never come to hate each other, which sets a limit before the first harsh word is said: the settlement matters, and so does the relationship afterward. The prayer does not settle the money, remove the grief, or make the two agree on everything. If the dispute is serious, a lawyer or a trusted elder may still be needed.
