Learning Finished, Fear Ended

Meaning · English
Nachiketas received this knowledge from Death, and the whole method of yoga with it. He became free of stain and free of dying, and he reached Brahman. Anyone else who knows the Self in this way will do the same.
Three words carry the verse. Vidya is knowledge, from the root vid, to know, and here it means knowing the Self directly, not collecting facts. Yoga is a discipline, from yuj, to join or yoke, and the text speaks of its whole method, so nothing is left out. Virajas means without rajas, the dust or stain of restless wanting that clouds the mind. Brahman is the limitless reality underneath everything, and the Self, atman, is that same reality known from inside. Yama answers the boy who waited three nights at his door. Nachiketas took both the teaching and the method. He lost the stain, he lost the fear of dying, and he reached Brahman. Yama then adds that the result belongs to no one person: whoever knows the Self this way goes the same way. The reason is in the pairing. Knowing without practice stays an idea, and practice without knowing has no direction. Shankara reads the reaching of Brahman as no journey to a place, since Brahman is already one's own Self. He says it is the ending of ignorance, and that knowledge itself frees, with yoga preparing the mind for it. The verse asks the listener to take the teaching whole, and treats the boy's freedom as open to anyone.
A lamp is lit from another lamp. The first flame loses nothing, and the second burns just as bright and can light a third. Nachiketas is the second lamp, lit by Yama. His freedom was no private prize. It passes to whoever brings a ready wick and touches it to the flame.
1. Tonight, write down one teaching you already trust, such as speaking only what is true or pausing before you answer in anger. 2. Beside it, write one small practice that puts it to work, and attach it to a fixed moment tomorrow, like the first five minutes after waking. 3. Do it for seven days, and each evening note in one line whether it was done and what you noticed. 4. On the eighth day, read the notes and keep or change the practice.
A man of fifty-three stands at the edge of a municipal pool on his first morning of lessons. He has told himself all his life that swimming is for other people, people who learned as children. The instructor says anyone can learn, and he half believes it. Yama's closing words speak to that moment. What Nachiketas received was a teacher, a full method and a result said to be open to others, so the man need not be special. He can take the teaching whole: listen to the instructor, then do the practice, week after week, without skipping the dull drills. He can also treat his doubt as ordinary, because every beginner has it. Ordinary experience bears this out, since a skill is rarely gained from advice alone or from practice with no guidance. The verse does not promise the pool will feel safe on the first day. It does not promise his fear will vanish quickly, and it does not replace a doctor if he has a heart or breathing condition. Its promise concerns the Self, and the text offers that as its own teaching.
