His powers are always ready to veil his own true nature, for no notion arises without being shot through with the word. This is Shiva's power of action, dwelling in the bound soul. It binds him. Yet when it stays on its own path and is known for what it is, it brings accomplishment.
Four words carry this teaching. Pashu is the bound soul, literally a creature on a tether. Shabda is the word. Pratyaya is a notion, any idea or perception that rises in the mind. Kriya shakti is the power of action, Shiva's own power of doing and making. The Karikas say Shiva's powers are always ready to cover his own nature, the self that simply knows. The reason given is that no notion arises without the word running through it. You see a cup, and the mind has already said cup. The name arrives first, and the bare knowing underneath it goes unnoticed. That same power of action lives in the bound soul, and it ties him, because he takes the named thing for the whole of what is there. Then comes the turn. When the power stays on its own path and is known, it brings accomplishment. It is one power with two outcomes, a tether or a tool, and the difference is knowing it. The question behind the teaching is how a self that is free comes to be bound at all. The answer is that no outside enemy does it. Shiva's own power does it, working through words. The commentators read it as one power seen in two ways, not two powers. What the text asks of the listener is to catch the word arriving, and to see it as the very power that could free him.
A kitchen where every jar carries a label in your own handwriting. You reach for the label, never the jar. Over the years you stop seeing salt, rice, or tea, and see only the words. The labels are useful, and they also stand between you and what is inside.
1. Choose one ordinary object near you today, a cup or a window, and look at it for one minute. 2. Notice the moment its name arrives in your mind. Notice that the name comes before you have really looked. 3. Once this evening, when you feel annoyed at someone, find the word your mind used for them, such as lazy or rude. Hold the word at a distance for a few breaths. 4. Say nothing about it to anyone. Only notice.
A woman sits by her father's bed while the doctor says one word, dementia. Before the doctor finishes, she has stopped seeing her father. She sees the word: the decline, the years ahead, the forgetting. He smiles at her, and she barely sees it. The teaching would change that moment in small steps. First she notices that a word has arrived and covered the man in front of her. Second, she sees that the word is only part of what is there. He is also the one who still knows her face and still likes tea with two spoons of sugar. Third, she lets the word do its proper work. It tells her what to ask, what care to arrange, and which doctor to call. It no longer decides who is sitting in the chair. Ordinary experience confirms that a label can shape what we see before we have looked. The teaching does not promise that the diagnosis will be gentler, that grief will lift, or that the doctor is no longer needed.
