The circle of powers that rises from the mass of letters becomes something that feeds on him. His lordship dimmed by limiting powers, he is called a bound creature. For him the taste of the supreme nectar falls away, through the notions that arise in him. By these he comes to lack independence, and what he can reach is only the bare object.

Four words carry this teaching. Kala is a limiting power, a small portion that shrinks the self's natural lordship. Pashu means a bound creature, one tied like cattle to a post. Pratyaya is a notion or idea that arises in the mind and is taken as the whole truth. Tanmatra means just that much, the bare object with nothing around it. The Spanda Karikas say the powers born from the mass of letters, which is language in all its fragments, should serve the self. Instead the self becomes their food. Its lordship is dimmed, and then it is called a pashu. The commentators read the supreme nectar as the self's own fullness of delight. It is lost through the notions that rise one after another. Because of them the self is no longer free, and its reach narrows to the bare object in front of it. This answers a plain question: how does a free consciousness end up bound? The answer given is that it is not chained from outside. It is taken over by its own naming and its own ideas. The listener is asked to see this happening, since a notion seen as a notion loosens its hold.

A man at a railway station listens so closely to each announcement, and watches the departures board so hard, that he forgets where he was going and why. The announcements are the powers of words, the board is the bare object, and the forgotten journey is the self's own fullness.

1. Today, for five minutes, sit with a cup of tea and watch your thoughts. Each time one begins with a label, such as "he is lazy" or "I am bad at this", say quietly: a notion has arisen. 2. After naming it, look at what you had stopped noticing: the cup's warmth, the sounds in the room, your own breathing. 3. Look at one ordinary object for a full minute without naming it, then go on with your day.

A mother stands at the school gate when another parent remarks that her son is the slow one in class. By evening the remark has become a verdict. She watches him eat and sees only a slow boy. She hears his laugh and does not hear it. The teaching would change this moment step by step. First she would see that a notion has arisen, a few words that have gathered a crowd of fears around them. Then she would notice what the notion has pushed out: the boy himself, his hands, his questions, the way he has just begun to read. Her attention, which had shrunk to a single bare object, would be free to widen again. Ordinary experience agrees that a label, once stuck, colours everything seen afterward. The teaching does not say the remark was false or kind, and it does not settle whether the boy needs help. If his teacher or a doctor suggests an assessment, that is a matter for them, and the verse offers no substitute for it.
