Meaning · English
The awakened one stays always alert. With knowing he looks over the whole field of what is experienced, and gathers all of it into one place. After that, nothing else can press him down.
Three words carry the verse. Prabuddha is the one who is awake: pra, fully, and buddha, awakened. Gocara is the field of experience, literally where the cows range, so everything the senses and mind graze on. Aropana, from ropayet, means placing something upon a ground, setting it down in one spot. The verse runs in order. The awakened one stays alert at all times, not only in calm hours. With jnana, knowing, he looks over the whole range of what comes to him: sights, sounds, thoughts, moods. Then he sets all of it down in one place. The text does not name that place here; the verses before it speak of the knower who pervades all things. After that, nothing other than that one place can press him down. Pida, being pressed or tormented, comes from things felt as separate and heavy, each pulling alone. The Spanda Karikas teach this because the earlier verses promise that a person who pervades all things needs no more words. This one answers how daily life, with its many pulls, can be held that way. It asks the listener to stay awake and to see everything as belonging to one ground.
A shepherd at dusk walks the whole hillside once, looking over every slope, then calls the scattered flock into a single fold. Outside, wolves and weather stay outside. The hillside is the field of experience, the fold is the one place where all of it is gathered, and the shepherd's walk is the knowing.
1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as a walk or washing up, and begin by looking over everything present: sounds, body, thoughts, mood. 2. Name nothing as a problem. Just see all of it at once, as one field. 3. When one thing tugs hard, such as a worry or a message, notice it is one item among the others, then widen again. 4. Stop after ten minutes and note which pull felt lighter.
A mother stands in the kitchen at seven in the morning. The kettle is boiling, her son cannot find his shoe, her phone shows a message from work, and her own jaw is tight. Each demand shouts as if it were the only one. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she stays awake to the whole scene instead of being pulled into one corner. Then she looks over all of it together: the kettle, the shoe, the message, her jaw. Seen as one field, the demands fall into order and stop competing. Then she acts on the nearest one with the rest still in view. Ordinary experience agrees that a worry looks larger when it is the only thing in sight and smaller when set among the others. The Spanda Karikas teach more than that, since the one place all is gathered is the knowing self, which the text names as the ground of everything. The verse does not promise the shoe will be found, the message will be kind, or the morning will be easy. It speaks of how the pressure is held, not of the removal of the tasks.
