Meaning · English

But when the yogi is firmly rooted in one place, then for him the closing and the rising of the world come under his hold. Holding them steady, he comes into the state of the true enjoyer, and from that he becomes lord of the wheel.

Two words carry the verse. Laya is dissolving, the closing of an experience. Udaya is rising, its appearing. Together they are the spanda, the throb of consciousness, seen as the world opening and shutting. Bhoktritva is the state of the enjoyer, the one who experiences, as opposed to the one who is carried along by what he experiences. The verse speaks of being rooted in one place, and the text means the one Self, the knowing that is present in every experience. The earlier verses describe the bound person: pulled by thought-forms, helpless in his enjoying, going round again and again. This verse gives the other case. When the yogi is rooted in that one place, he sees every experience rise and close within it. He restrains them, meaning he is no longer dragged off by them. He becomes the true enjoyer, the master of what he experiences. Then he becomes chakreshvara, lord of the wheel, the circle of the mind's powers that had held him. The question behind it is how one gets out of that helplessness. The Karikas answer: not by fighting each thing that rises, but by being established in the one from which all rising and closing happen. The commentators read the wheel as the circle of the senses and inner powers. The verse asks the listener to find where he stands.

A potter's wheel spins fast. A beginner chases the clay as it whirls and is flung about. The master sits steady at the centre, hands still, and the clay takes shape. The wheel is the rising and closing of experience, and the steady centre is the one place the yogi is rooted.

1. Choose one ordinary moment today, such as waiting for a kettle or a bus. Stay for two minutes. 2. Notice a thought or a sound appear, and notice it fade. Do not follow it. 3. Ask each time, quietly, 'who is aware of this?' Rest in that awareness before the next thing arrives. 4. Repeat once more this evening and notice what stayed the same while things came and went.

A mother is at the stove with a pan on the boil, the phone buzzing, a child calling from the next room, and a worry about tomorrow's bills rising all at once. Each thing arrives and pulls her. Under the verse she does one small thing: she notices that the pull of each is a coming and a going, and that she is the one watching it all. She lets the phone buzz, turns the flame down, answers the child, and the worry passes through without taking over. She is still doing everything, but she is choosing the order instead of being thrown from one thing to the next. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who has paused and caught their breath handles several demands better than one who reacts to each. The verse does not promise the bills will shrink or the worry will never return. It does not replace rest, help from others, or a doctor if the strain becomes too heavy. The text's teaching is the deeper rooting in the Self, and this scene shows only its first, smallest taste.
