I bow to the teacher's speech, which carries a person across a shoreless sea of doubt. Its words are many-coloured and its meanings wonderful. This knowledge is a treasure that is hard to come by. Yet once it is gained and laid away in the hidden cave of the heart, it brings good to the whole world, always, as it did through Vasugupta.

Two things are said here: a bow, and a promise. The key words come first. Gurubharati is the guru's speech: guru is the weighty one, the teacher, and bharati is speech, voice. Hridguha is the cave of the heart, the inmost place where something is kept out of sight. Jnanadhana is knowledge as wealth, a treasure and not a pile of facts. Shiva here carries its plain sense of welfare, good fortune. The bow comes first. The Spanda Karikas honour the teacher's speech because it ferries a person over a sea of doubt with no far shore. They add that its words are varied and its meanings surprising. Doubt is the problem this book has been answering, so the book ends by thanking what answered it. Then the promise. The knowledge is hard to get. But once gained and set in the heart's cave, it is for the good of everyone, every time. The example given is Vasugupta, who received the teaching. The text does not say the knowledge must be broadcast. It says that kept in the heart, it already does good. The reader is asked to receive the teaching, let it settle in the heart, and trust that what is kept there reaches others without being forced on them.

A well-digger strikes water in a dry village and covers the mouth with a stone slab. He does not shout about it. Women still come at dawn and fill their pots, and the whole lane drinks. The heart is the covered well, and the teaching kept in it feeds everyone nearby.

1. Choose one line of the teaching you have read that steadied you. Write it on a slip of paper. 2. Keep the slip in a pocket for one day. Say nothing about it to anyone. 3. In the evening, notice one moment when you spoke or acted a little more calmly because it was there. 4. Fold the slip away in a drawer. Let it stay kept, not displayed.

A retired railway clerk is sitting on his veranda when a neighbour's son, frightened about tomorrow's job interview, asks what to say. The clerk has no speech prepared. He only has what he has kept for forty years: a way of pausing before he answers, and of admitting when he does not know. He lets the boy talk first. He says very little. The boy leaves steadier than he arrived. The verse speaks to a moment like this. What a person has truly taken in and held quietly does its work through who he is, more than through what he announces. Ordinary experience bears this out: people tend to learn calm from calm people, and rarely from lectures. The verse also says the treasure is hard to gain, so it asks patience with the long keeping. It does not promise that the interview will go well, or that kind words replace practical help, or a doctor, where those are needed. It says only that what is kept in the heart is for the good of others.
