Meaning · English

Staying awake at night is drying; sleeping by day is unctuous. Dozing while seated is neither drying nor clogging. In summer, because vata gathers, the taking-away season brings dryness, and the nights are short, sleep by day is wholesome. In other seasons it produces kapha and pitta.

Vagbhata sets two habits side by side. Staying up at night is ruksha, drying: it leaves the body rough and depleted. Sleeping by day is snigdha, unctuous: it adds moisture and heaviness. Dozing while sitting up falls between. It is neither drying nor abhishyandi, the word for what thickens and clogs the body's channels. Then he brings in the season. In grishma, India's hot, dry summer before the rains, he names three reasons a day nap is wholesome. Vata, the dosha of air and movement, is building up. The year is in adana, the half when the sun draws moisture out of living things. And the nights are short. In every other season, he says, day sleep breeds kapha, the heavy, moist dosha, and pitta, the hot one. In this system's terms, the oiliness that repairs a parched body becomes excess when the body is not parched. So the weather decides the nap. A reader far from India can take the spirit, the hottest, driest weeks where they live, rather than the Indian calendar.

1. Tonight, keep your usual bedtime instead of staying up an extra hour on a screen, and notice how your eyes, skin and mood feel tomorrow. 2. On a hot summer afternoon, after lunch, lie down for twenty to thirty minutes, then get up. 3. In cooler months, if you feel drowsy after lunch, sit upright in a chair and let yourself doze for a few minutes instead of lying down. 4. Look at this week's weather, whether it is hot and dry with short nights or not, and let that decide whether you nap.

Sleep medicine agrees with the first half. Regular night sleep matters, and missing it shows up the next day as tiredness, poorer concentration and irritability. People often report dry eyes and dull skin after late nights, though 'drying' as a quality has no exact modern match. Doctors also accept that a short nap restores alertness, especially when night sleep was short, which echoes the short-nights reason. Long daytime sleeps can leave grogginess and make it harder to sleep at night, and a doctor would want to look into heavy daytime sleepiness. In hot climates a midday rest is sensible, since heat disturbs night sleep. Vata gathering, the adana half-year, and day sleep producing kapha and pitta have no modern counterpart. Anyone ill, pregnant, elderly or very young should rest when they need to, whatever the season.
