Meaning · English
Samadhi is perfected through ishvara-pranidhana, the complete offering of oneself to Ishvara.
Three words carry this sutra. Samadhi is the mind gathered fully onto one object, from sam, together, and a-dha, to place. Siddhi is accomplishment, a thing brought to completion. Ishvara-pranidhana joins Ishvara, the Lord, with pranidhana, a laying down or placing before. It means offering oneself and one's actions to Ishvara. Put together: samadhi reaches its full ripeness through that offering. Patanjali names it as the last of the five observances, after cleanliness, contentment, fervent discipline and study. He says it because the earlier practices can leave a person leaning on his own effort and his own cleverness. Samadhi asks for the mind to stop gripping, and this offering loosens the grip. Vyasa's Bhashya says that when Ishvara is the one offered to, Ishvara looks kindly on the practitioner, and samadhi then comes close. Later readers such as Vachaspati Mishra and Bhoja read the offering as devotion that turns every act toward Ishvara. The commentators agree that the aim is samadhi, and that this observance is the nearest means to it.
A person carrying a heavy bag up a long stair keeps shifting it from hand to hand and cannot climb freely. When he sets it down at the door of the house, his arms swing loose and he can step through. Offering oneself is setting the bag down; the open arms are the mind free to rest on one thing.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or answering a message, and do it carefully. 2. When it is finished, say silently, "This is offered," and let go of how it turned out. 3. In the evening, sit for three minutes and notice one place where you were holding on to a result. Only notice it. Do not argue with it.
