Study Opens Contact With Chosen Deity

Yoga Sutras 2.44

Meaning · English

From svadhyaya, steady study of oneself and of sacred texts, comes close union with the deity one has chosen and cherishes.

Three words carry this sutra. Svadhyaya is sva, 'one's own', and adhyaya, 'going into'. It means study, and also repeated recitation of sacred words. Ishta-devata is the chosen deity: ishta is 'wished for, dear', devata is 'a shining being, a god'. It is the form of the divine the practitioner holds closest. Samprayoga is 'joining together', a real meeting, being in touch. The plain sense: Patanjali teaches that when study and recitation are kept up, the practitioner comes into contact with the deity he loves. The sutra names one practice and one result. Why say it? The sutras before it list what each observance brings. Santosha brings happiness, tapas brings refined body and senses. Svadhyaya is one of the observances, and this sutra says what it yields: closeness to what the heart is set on. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes it that sages, siddhas and gods become visible to the one who recites and studies, and help his work. Later commentators generally follow this reading, though they differ on how the deity is understood.

A person writes to a distant friend every evening, reading old letters before they begin. After months the friend feels near, as if in the room. Steady reading and repeating of the words works that way: the object of devotion stops being far away and becomes someone known.

1. Choose one short passage from a text you respect. A few lines is enough. 2. Today, at a quiet hour, read it slowly aloud, twice, then once in a whisper. Take about five minutes. 3. Notice which word or phrase stays with you afterward, and what in you turns toward it. 4. Repeat at the same hour for a week, keeping the same passage.
