Tapas Refines Body, Senses

Yoga Sutras 2.43

Meaning · English

Through tapas, as impurity wears thin, the body and the senses come to their full capacity.

Take the words one at a time. Kaya is the body. Indriya is a sense, a faculty that reaches out to the world: seeing, hearing, touching and the rest. Siddhi is a thing brought to completion, a perfected ability. Ashuddhi is impurity, whatever clouds or clogs. Kshaya is a wearing away, a dwindling. Tapas is heat, and so the discipline that burns: voluntary effort that asks something of you. Read whole, the sutra says that tapas thins out impurity, and as impurity thins, the body and senses become fully capable. The perfection was not added from outside. The covering is what goes. Patanjali lists the fruit of each observance in turn, and this is the fruit of tapas. It rests on the earlier sutras on purity, where the clouded mind and body are the obstacle. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, says tapas removes the veil of impurity, and then powers of the body and of the senses appear, such as very fine perception at a distance. Later commentators largely follow him.

A brass lamp has gone dull and brown in a cupboard. Rubbed daily with a dry cloth, it slowly shows its own gold. Nothing is painted on. The dullness comes off. In the same way, steady discipline removes what coats the body and senses, and their natural clarity is what remains.

1. Pick one small, safe discipline you can keep for a week, such as no phone during one meal, or ten minutes of quiet before bed. 2. Do it at the same time each day, and keep it short enough to finish without strain. 3. Afterward, spend a minute noticing how your body feels and how clearly you hear and see the room. 4. Do not add more if it becomes harsh. The aim is steadiness, not hardship.
