Conditions for Breath Practice
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2.1
Meaning · English
When the seat is firm, the practitioner has the senses in hand and eats food that is wholesome and measured. Then, by the path the teacher has shown, he should practise the breath disciplines, the pranayamas, carefully and well.
The second chapter opens by setting out what must already be in place before breathing is taken up. Pranayama is the discipline of prana, the life-breath, through the breath. The Pradipika names four conditions. First, a firm asana. Asana here is the seat, and firm means steady and settled, not fidgeting. The Jyotsna adds that this may be a seat such as siddhasana. The breath cannot be worked with while the body keeps shifting. Second, the practitioner is vashi, one who has the senses under his own control. The commentary reads this as having conquered the senses. Third, he eats what is wholesome and measured. The commentary says these are the food rules already given in the earlier chapter, and nothing new is added here. Fourth, he practises by the path the teacher has taught. The text does not leave the method to the student's own invention. The word for breath practices is plural. Several are coming, and the next verses begin to describe them. The commentary says the opening word marks an auspicious beginning and a turn from asana to breath. It also says the student should practise properly, with eagerness, courage and patience. That last point is the commentary's addition, not the verse's own. The text gives these conditions as the ground. It treats the breath as something to approach once body, appetite, senses and guidance are in order, not as a first step.
A retired schoolteacher sits on a folded blanket after a light supper, back supported, and tries to slow her breathing. She is doing, without knowing it, what this verse lists. Her seat is comfortable enough to forget, and she is not full. These points hold up well. A body that is not shifting or strained makes slow breathing easier. A heavy meal presses on the diaphragm and makes deep breathing uncomfortable. Slow, quiet breathing is widely taught as a way to settle the body, and a competent teacher can notice mistakes that a book cannot. The verse says nothing about how long to breathe, how to count, or whether to hold. Those details come later in the Pradipika and are not part of this verse. Breath holding in particular can bring dizziness or strain, and anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure concerns, or who is pregnant, should ask a doctor first. The idea of prana has no counterpart in physiology. It is the tradition's account, not a measured thing. Controlling the senses is closer to what psychology calls attention and self-regulation, and it can be built gradually.
