Why Clogged Channels Block Stillness
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 2.4
Meaning · English
When the channels are choked with impurity, the breath does not travel the middle way. Then how can the state beyond the mind arise, and how can the work be accomplished?
This verse is a question, and the answer is built into it. The Pradipika asks: if the nadis are full of impurity, how can anything come of the practice? Nadi means a channel. In the tradition's account these are the pathways along which prana, the vital breath, is said to move. Mala means impurity or obstruction. Madhyaga means going in the middle. The middle is the central channel, the sushumna, and the text says breath does not enter it while the other channels are clogged. Unmani is the state beyond ordinary thinking, where the mind rests without effort. It is the goal the text is reaching for. Karya, the work, is the task of the whole practice. The commentary reads it as kaivalya, final freedom, and that is the commentary's gloss, not the verse's own word. The reasoning runs in reverse. The text names what happens when the channels are not clear: the breath stays out of the middle, the still state does not come, and the work is not done. From this the reader is to see why cleansing comes first. The verse gives no method here. It gives the reason a method is needed. What it asks of a practitioner is to take preparation seriously before looking for results. Nothing here tells a beginner to force the breath or hold it. The commentary adds only that the breath enters the middle when the channels are clean.
A man in his sixties, breathless after climbing a flight of stairs with shopping, sits down and finds his breath is shallow and tight in the chest. Slow, easy breathing comes back only once he stops hurrying. That small scene is close to what is known today. Calm, even breathing goes with a settled state of mind, and agitated breathing goes with an agitated one. Doctors would say that is well established, and that learning to slow the breath can help people feel steadier. The nadis, the sushumna and impurities blocking prana have no match in anatomy. No such channels have been found, and the idea that breath enters a central pathway is the tradition's account, not physiology. The nearest honest translation is that a body carrying tension, a blocked nose or a stiff chest finds quiet breathing harder. Whether clearing those things leads to an unmani state, the text's goal, is a claim of the tradition that medicine neither tests nor confirms. Anyone with lung or heart trouble should take advice before any breath practice, and should never strain.
