Meaning · English
Mind does not touch an object, and it does not touch the appearance of an object either. The object has never come to be, and the appearance is not separate from it. Mind never makes contact with a cause, in any of the three times, past, present or future. If there is no cause, how could its error ever arise?
Three words carry this. Citta is mind, from the root cit, to perceive or be aware: the thing that thinks, remembers and takes in the world. Artha is an object, a thing aimed at. Viparyasa is error, from a root meaning to turn the wrong way round: seeing a thing as other than it is. Gaudapada first says mind never touches an object. What it holds is not the thing itself. He adds that it does not touch the appearance of an object either, and that the appearance is not apart from the object. Both have no birth, so there is nothing real to make contact with. Then he turns to cause. Mind never touches a cause in past, present or future. A cause would be what explains why the mistake happens. If there is none, the mistake has no ground. So his closing question asks how error could ever arise at all. This is taught here because he has been answering those who say that a world, or a mistake about it, must come from something. He gives no cause to find, only the question dissolved. Shankara reads the passage as showing that the dream-like seeing has no basis outside awareness. Some Buddhist thinkers of his day, Vasubandhu among them, also taught that mind knows only its own appearances. Gaudapada goes on to say that even those have never been born. For the listener, it asks for an honest look at whether the cause they keep hunting for was ever found.
A child is sure there is a snake on the dim path at dusk. She looks for where it came from, and finds no nest and no track, because it was only a coiled rope. The search for the snake's origin ends when she sees no snake was ever there to start from.
1. Next time a worry or an angry thought grips you, stop for one minute, where you are. 2. Ask quietly: what is actually touching me right now, the event itself or a picture of it in my mind? 3. Look for where the worry began. Note whether you can find a clear starting point. 4. Write one line about what you noticed, then carry on with your day.
A man stands at the bus stop at dawn, certain his sister's silence means she is angry with him. He rehearses the quarrel, argues his side, and feels his chest tighten. Then he checks his phone: her battery died. Ordinary experience already confirms this much, that what we react to is often our own picture of a thing, not the thing. The text teaches more than that. It says mind never touches an object at all, and the error has no cause to be found in any of the three times. In his moment, this teaching would work step by step. First he sees that the anger is aimed at an appearance. Then he asks where the mistake began, and finds no solid beginning, only a thought that arrived. Then the grip loosens a little, and he can simply ask her. The teaching does not promise that people never are angry, that a real quarrel is imaginary, or that grief and illness are unreal to the one who suffers them. It does not replace checking facts or seeing a doctor when the body is unwell.
