Mind Is Never Born

Gaudapada Karika 4.28

Therefore the mind is not born, and what the mind sees is not born. Those who see its birth are looking, truly, for a footprint in the sky.

Three words carry it. Citta is the mind, from cit, to be aware, to perceive. Drishya is what is seen, from drish, to see. Jati is birth, a coming into being, from jan. Gaudapada gives the whole teaching as a conclusion, and tasmat, therefore, points back to what he has just argued. The mind never actually touches a real object, and the look of an object is no different from the object. If no real thing stands behind the mind, nothing real gave birth to it. So the mind is not born, and the things it sees are not born either. Gaudapada then names the mistake: people who trace the mind's birth, asking what produced it and when, are following a footprint in the sky. Birds leave no track there. The search is real, but the track was never made. Pada, a footprint or step, is the word he uses. He is not calling the mind worthless. He is saying that every account of how it began is looking for something that is not there. Shankara's commentary reads this as the close of the argument about cause. Nagarjuna's denial of any arising and Vasubandhu's teaching of mind alone sound close to it, and Gaudapada's way of getting there is his own. What it asks of the listener is to stop hunting for an origin.

Sunlight off a glass of water throws a wavering bright patch on the ceiling. Someone might ask where that patch was born, and search the plaster for its beginning. The plaster holds no beginning to find. Looking for the mind's birth is the same search.

1. Tonight, when a worry starts to loop, ask once where it began and what made it. Give that question a full minute. 2. Notice whether you find a first moment, or only more thoughts about the thought. 3. Tomorrow morning, recall the same worry and see whether it has the weight it had in the dark. Write one line about what you noticed.

A woman lies awake at three in the morning, replaying a sharp remark from her sister-in-law. She tries to work out where it started, whether it was the wedding, the money, or something said years ago. Each answer opens another question, and the night gets longer. The teaching offers a different move. Gaudapada says the mind is not born and its seen things are not born, and that looking for their birth is like tracing a footprint in the sky. She can stop asking where the thought came from and simply watch it rise and pass, as she would watch a car's headlights cross a ceiling. The hunt for a first cause quietly ends, and what is left is smaller than the argument she was building. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a thought that fills the whole room at night is usually much smaller by morning. The teaching does not promise that the remark was harmless, that the quarrel is settled, or that sleep will come. If sleeplessness lasts for weeks, a doctor is the right person to speak to.
