The story · English

Parasara had come to the end of his telling. He turned to Maitreya and said, "I have related to you this Purana. It is as sacred as the Vedas, and everyone who hears it is cleared of sin." Then he gathered up what it had held. It told of the first creation and the second, of the families of the patriarchs, of the Manwantaras and the lines of kings. It told of celestials, Daityas, Gandharvas, serpents, Rakshasas, Yakshas, Vidhyadharas, Siddhas and heavenly nymphs. It told of ascetics who had gained wisdom and lived in devotion, of the four castes, and of the deeds of the best of men. It spoke of holy places, rivers, oceans and mountains, and of the lives of the truly wise. All of it, he said, wears sin away.

But the heart of the Purana, Parasara said, is Hari. He is the cause of the world's creation, its keeping and its ending. He is the soul of all things, and he is also all things. Sins that cling to a man fly from the name of Hari, as wolves run from a lion. Said with faith, the name burns sin away as fire burns the dross from metal. Even the remembering of it removes the stains of Kali Yuga and makes goodness grow. Hari is Indra and Rudra, the Adityas, the winds, the stars and the seven Rishis. He is men, animals, insects, trees, mountains and oceans. He has no form, yet he is the form of everything, from Mount Meru down to an atom. This Vishnu is the one the Purana describes.

Then Parasara spoke of what hearing it earns. The reward is equal to a horse-sacrifice, or to fasting at the holy places of Pryaga, Pushkara, Kurukshetra and Arbuda. Hearing it once is as good as pouring offerings into a fire kept burning for a year. He named one day in particular. A man who has mastered his passions may bathe at Mathura on the twelfth day of the bright half of the month of Jyeshtha, and look on the image of Hari. He receives a great reward, and so does the man who recites this Purana with his mind on Kesava. Whoever bathes in the Jamuna on that day, fasts, and worships Achyuta in Mathura is repaid as if he had performed horse-sacrifices without a break.

The ancestors, Parasara said, watch for such a man. When one of them sees another's forefathers raised up by their descendants' piety, he cries out, "If any of our descendants bathes in the Jamuna, fasts, and worships Govinda at Mathura in the bright half of Jyeshtha, he will win us a high place." A man of good birth who has worshipped Janarddana that month will offer rice-cakes to his blessed ancestors in the Yamuna. Reading even one section of this Purana with devotion earns the same merit as that bathing, those gifts to the dead, and that worship. And those who have fallen into the ocean of worldly life and are afraid may be set free by reading it. It frees them from bad dreams and from their faults.

Parasara then named the line through which the Purana came down. The Rishi Narayana first composed it. Brahma gave it to Ribhu, Ribhu to Pryabrata, and Pryabrata to Bhaguri. Bhaguri told it to Tambamitra, who gave it to Dadicha, who gave it to Saraswata. Bhrigu received it and taught Purukutsa, and Purukutsa taught the goddess Narmada. She gave it to the Naga king Dhritarashtra and to Purana of the same race, and they gave it to their king Vasuki. Vasuki gave it to Vatsa, and it passed on through Ashawtara, Kambala and Elapatra. When the ascetic Vedasiras went down to Patala, he received the whole Purana from the Nagas and gave it to Pramati. Pramati gave it to the wise Jatukarna, who taught many holy people.

"By the blessing of Vasishtha I came to know it," Parasara said, "and I have told it to you faithfully. Maitreya, at the end of the Kali age you will teach it to Samika." Whoever hears this great mystery is freed from sin, for it removes the stain of Kali. Whoever hears it daily has paid what he owes to his ancestors, to the gods and to other men. Hearing ten chapters earns the rare merit of giving a brown cow. Whoever hears the whole of it with his mind on Achyuta earns the reward of unbroken horse-sacrifices. The man who fixes his mind on Achyuta does not go to hell. Heaven itself seems a hindrance to him, and the realm of Brahma counts for little. Achyuta, living in a pure mind, gives it lasting freedom.

Parasara asked, "What wonder is it that sin falls away when this Vishnu's name is chanted? What else is worth hearing?" Sacrificers worship him as the god of sacrifice. He receives the offerings made to the ancestors and to the gods, and his names are Swaha and Swadha. When he enters the ear, all sin is destroyed. Then Parasara closed with praise. "Salutation to Purusottama, first of the gods, without beginning or end, who does not grow, decay or die. Salutation to Vishnu, who took on shapes and qualities, and who keeps all creatures. Salutation to him who is called heaven, air, fire, water and earth. May that unborn, eternal Hari, seen in many forms, give humankind the blessed state that has no birth and no decay."
