The story · English
Parasara began by telling Maitreya that the highest Being, the Purusottama, is known through holy study and through meditation. Each is a way to reach him, and each is called Brahma. A person should go from study to meditation, and from meditation back to study. When both are perfect, the supreme spirit shows itself. Study is one eye and meditation is the other, for one who has become one with Brahma does not see with the eye of flesh. Maitreya then asked what Yoga is, so that he might behold the upholder of the universe. Parasara said he would repeat what Kesidhwaja once taught the high-minded Khandikya, who was also called Janaka. Maitreya asked to hear first who these two men were, and how a talk on Yoga came to pass between them.
Parasara explained. There was a Janaka named Dharmadhwaja, who had two sons, Amitadhwaja and Kritadhwaja. Kritadhwaja was a king always devoted to the supreme spirit, and his son was the famous Kesidhwaja. Amitadhwaja's son was the Janaka called Khandikya. Khandikya was diligent and known across the earth for his pious observances. Kesidhwaja was gifted with spiritual knowledge. The two went to war, and Kesidhwaja drove Khandikya out of his kingdom. Khandikya wandered through woods and mountains with a few followers, his priest and his counsellors. He had no true wisdom, yet he performed many sacrifices, hoping by them to reach divine truth and to escape death that comes from ignorance.
Some time later, Kesidhwaja was engaged in his devotions when a fierce tiger killed his milch cow in the lonely forest. When the king heard of it, he asked the priests who served him what penance would atone for the loss. They did not know, and sent him to Kaseru. Kaseru did not know either, and said Sunaka could tell him. Kesidhwaja went to Sunaka, who answered: "I cannot answer you, great king, any more than Kaseru could. No one on earth can give you this knowledge except your enemy Khandikya, whom you have defeated." Kesidhwaja said: "Then I will go and visit my enemy. If he kills me, I will have the reward of one slain in a holy cause. If he tells me the penance, my sacrifice will be whole." He put on a deerskin, climbed into his chariot, and drove to the forest where Khandikya lived.
When Khandikya saw him coming, his eyes reddened with anger and he took up his bow. "You have put on deerskin to protect yourself from me," he said. "But the deer that wear this skin were killed by you and me with sharp arrows, and I will kill you. You are a lawless thief who took my kingdom, and you deserve death." Kesidhwaja answered: "I have come to ask you about my doubts, Khandikya, not to fight you. Put down your arrow and your anger." Khandikya withdrew to speak with his counsellors and priest. They urged him to kill Kesidhwaja, now within his reach, and so become king of the whole world again. Khandikya answered that this was true, but that Kesidhwaja would then win the next world while he held only the earth.
"This world is worth less than the next," Khandikya told them. "Winning the next world lasts forever, and winning this one is only for a while. I will not kill him. I will tell him what he wants to know." He came back and told Kesidhwaja to ask his question. Kesidhwaja told him about the cow's death and asked what penance he should perform. Khandikya explained fully the atonement that suited the case. With his leave, Kesidhwaja went back to the place of sacrifice and carried out every rite, including the supplementary ones. All his aims were met. Yet he thought: "The priests are honoured, every petitioner is content, and all that belongs to this world is done. Why does my mind feel that some duty is still unfulfilled?" Then he remembered he had given Khandikya no gift, as one owes a teacher. He mounted his chariot and drove at once to the dense forest.
Khandikya took up his weapons again to kill him, but Kesidhwaja cried out: "Hold, venerable sage. I have not come to harm you. Put aside your anger. I have come to give you the gift owed to my teacher. Through your lesson I completed my sacrifice. Ask for whatever you wish." Khandikya went back to his counsellors and asked what he should demand. His friends advised him to take back his whole kingdom, since wise men win kingdoms without armies. Khandikya thought, and laughed. "Why would someone like me want a kingdom that will not last? You advise well on worldly matters, but you do not know the life to come." He returned to Kesidhwaja and asked, "Do you truly wish to give me a gift as to your teacher?" "I do," said Kesidhwaja. Khandikya said: "You are learned in the knowledge of the soul. Teach me that, and your debt to your teacher is paid. Tell me which acts relieve human suffering."
