Meaning · English

By the grace of God alone, in people who have been carried out of great fear, the sense of oneness is born. He by whom all this is filled, self by self, within the self: how can I bow to him, the formless, undivided, kind, unending? This world of five elements is like a mirage of water. To whom, then, could I bow? I am one, without a stain. The self alone is all. Difference and no-difference are not found. Is it, is it not? How can I say? Wonder is all that shows itself to me.

Four verses open the song. The first gives its source. The avadhuta Dattatreya says the sense of oneness comes from God's grace, and it comes to those who have been brought through a great fear. That word, great fear, is the dread of birth, loss and death. Two words carry the first verse. Advaita means not-two: no second thing standing apart from the self. Vasana is the scent a mind keeps after something has soaked in, from vas, to dwell. So oneness here is a leaning of the mind, not a belief taken on. Then the song turns on worship. He asks how he can bow to the one who fills everything, formless and undivided. Bowing needs two, one who bows and one bowed to, and he finds only one. The world of five elements is likened to a mirage: it shows water, and no water is there to drink. To whom, then, could he bow? He is one, and the word niranjana, without stain, says nothing sticks to him. The last verse drops the pairs. The self alone is all, so difference and no-difference both fall away. Even is and is not cannot be said. What is left is wonder. The reason for beginning here is that the whole song is spoken from the far side. He is not arguing toward oneness. He sings from it. The text asks the listener to let go of the habit of reaching toward something outside, and to look at what is already speaking.

A wave rises on the sea and wonders where the sea is, so that it can bow to it. All along it has been water, lifted for a moment. The wave is the one who bows, the sea is the one bowed to, and the bowing has no place to land.

1. Tonight, sit for five quiet minutes with the lights low and your phone out of reach. 2. Ask once, slowly, "Who is aware of this room?" Then stop asking and listen. 3. Notice the moment a thought says "it is this" or "it is not this." Let it pass without picking a side. 4. Before sleep, name one thing that made you wonder today, however small.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning. His brother has just come out of surgery alive, and for hours the man had bargained with every fear he owned. Now the fear lets go, and he looks at the vending machine, the cold floor and the nurse's shoes as if for the first time. Everything feels near, and he has no wish to rank any of it. The text says oneness is born in just such people, those brought through great fear by grace. Ordinary experience agrees that fear narrows the mind to a single point, and that when it lifts the world seems wider. The verses would change that moment in small steps. He would stop sorting the night into mine and not mine. He would let the question of whether it was luck or mercy rest. He would stay with the wonder that the verses end on. The limit is plain. The verses do not promise the brother stays well, or that fear will not return. They name what can open when fear loosens, and they are no substitute for the doctors still needed down the hall.
