A Steady, Easy Seat
Yoga Sutras 2.46
Meaning · English
The seat is that which is steady and comfortable: held without wavering, and without discomfort.
Three words carry the sutra. Sthira is steady or firm, from a root meaning to stand. Sukha is ease or comfort, the opposite of pain. Asana is a seat, from a root meaning to sit. Together: the seat is steady and at ease. Both are named, and neither is dropped. Steady without ease turns rigid and sore. Ease without steadiness slumps and drifts. Patanjali gives no shape, no list of postures, no placing of the limbs. He sets only these two tests. The sutra answers a plain problem. Yoga asks the mind to be held still, and a body that aches, shifts or sags keeps pulling the mind back to itself. So the body is settled first, as one of the limbs of the practice. Vyasa's commentary, the oldest, names several sitting postures as examples. For him the point is a seat in which one can stay without distress. The later commentators follow him in this. The measure remains steadiness together with ease.
A tent pitched well. The pegs are driven deep and the poles stand straight, so no gust moves it. The canvas is not pulled so tight that it tears. Steadiness is the pegs and poles. Ease is the slack in the cloth. A good seat has both.
1. Today, choose one place to sit for five minutes: a chair, a cushion, or the floor against a wall. 2. Settle until your back is upright without effort and your hands rest without gripping. Nothing should pinch or pull. 3. After a minute, check two things. Is anything wobbling? Is anything straining? Adjust the seat a little and check again. 4. Sit out the rest of the time in that position, and notice when the body asks for attention.
