A barren woman's son
Gaudapada Karika 3.27

Of what is real, birth may be spoken of through maya, but never in truth. If a thing were born in truth, it would be born when it is already born. Of what is unreal, birth through maya is not fitting either, and in truth it never happens. A barren woman's son is not born in truth, and not even through maya.
Three words carry the argument. Sat is what is, the real. Asat is what is not. Tattvatah means in truth, from tattva, that-ness, the thing as it actually is. Gaudapada is asking what kind of birth can be spoken of at all. He takes the real first. Through maya, the power by which one thing appears as many, we can speak of the real as being born. In truth we cannot. Anything truly born would have to be born while already born, and that makes no sense. What already is needs no birth. Then he takes the unreal. It cannot be born even through maya, because maya needs something to appear as. His example is the son of a barren woman, vandhya-putra, a person who does not exist and never will. Nothing is there to be born, truly or by appearance. So both doors close. The real is not born in truth, and the unreal is not born at all. Shankara reads this as shutting out every account of the world arising as a real event. Nagarjuna and the Buddhist thinkers also argued that neither what is nor what is not can truly be produced, and the Karika's conclusion is its own. The question behind it is why the world seems to begin, change and end if the Self never does. The answer is that the beginning is an appearance. The verse asks the listener to see that what looks like creation was never a real birth.
A hand held before a lamp throws a rabbit on the wall. The rabbit seems to hop and twitch, yet nothing was born. There is only a hand and light. The shadow works as the world does: it appears through maya, rests on something real, and was never truly born.
1. Tonight, pick one worry about tomorrow and write it as a single sentence on paper. 2. Beside it, write what is actually in front of you right now: the room, your breath, the cup beside you. 3. Read the worry again and ask whether it exists anywhere except as a picture being shown in your mind. 4. Sit quietly for three minutes with the picture and the room side by side, and notice which one stays.
A woman lies awake at one in the morning, going over the conversation she expects with her landlord tomorrow. She hears his voice, his refusal, her own stammer. Her chest is tight and her heart is fast. The text teaches that nothing is born in truth. Appearances arise through maya, and what is unreal cannot arise even as an appearance. Taken into that hour, the first step is to see that the landlord's words are not in the room. Only a picture of them is. The second step is to separate what is there, a tight chest, a dark ceiling, a pillow, from what is only shown, the quarrel that has not happened. The third is to let the picture be seen as a picture, and then look for the one who is watching it, which the text says does not change. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired mind pictures things worse than they turn out. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise that the landlord will be kind, that the rent will be waived, or that the fear will leave on command. If the sleeplessness goes on for weeks, that is a matter for a doctor.
