The verse and its meaning · Gaudapada's Karika · Gaudapada — Not Two
The trembling mind
Gaudapada Karika 3.29
Meaning · English
As in a dream the mind trembles through maya, taking on the look of two, so in waking the mind trembles through maya, taking on the look of two. The mind, though not-two, appears as two in dream, without doubt. And so too in waking: the mind, though not-two, appears as two, without doubt.
Three words carry the verses. Maya is the power by which what is one shows up as many; it is not a claim that nothing exists. Spandate means to throb or quiver: the mind is never still, and each quiver throws up a picture. Dvayabhasa is made of dvaya, two, and abhasa, a shining-forth or mere look: the appearance of two, a look of twofoldness. Gaudapada says the mind quivers by maya and takes the look of subject and object, seer and seen. He says it in dream, then says the very same in waking, with no difference between the two. Then he adds that the mind itself is not-two. Only its look is two, and he says there is no doubt about this. The reason it is taught here is his earlier work: he has argued that nothing is truly born, and now he answers the obvious objection, which is that waking feels solid and dream does not. He puts both on one footing. Shankara reads the pair as saying that duality is the mind's own movement, in both states. A reader may notice that this is also close to how Vasubandhu's school spoke of mind-only. The verses ask the listener to see the quiver as the quiver, and not to take its pictures for a second thing standing apart.
A pond with a breeze across it breaks the moon into many shaking moons, and the ripples seem to hold separate lights. Wind or no wind, there is one moon and one water. The mind is the pond, its trembling makes the many, and the not-two is what it never stopped being.
1. Tonight, when you lie down, recall one dream you remember and notice how fully it felt like a world with others in it. 2. Tomorrow, once while waiting in a queue or for a kettle, watch your thoughts for one minute and see them rise and pass like ripples. 3. When someone annoys you today, pause for three breaths and notice that your picture of them is made in your own mind. 4. Say nothing about this to anyone; just notice.
A man wakes at three in the morning sure that his brother is angry with him. He lies there rehearsing the argument, the tone of voice, the reply. Every part feels as real as the ceiling above him. The verses ask him to look at what is doing the rehearsing: the mind, throbbing as it does in dream, building two sides, himself and an accuser. He may see that the brother in this scene is a picture his own mind made, and that the heat in his chest comes with the picture. Then he can wait for morning, and ask his brother. Ordinary experience agrees that a dream feels completely real while it lasts, and that tired minds produce convincing worries at night. The verses do not say the brother is unreal, or that the quarrel is nothing. They do not remove the hurt, settle a real dispute, or replace sleep, a doctor, or help for anxious nights that keep returning.
