Maitreya spoke to his teacher. "Venerable sir, you have told me the observances of the devout, and the duties of the castes and the orders of life. Now tell me the lines of the kings who have ruled the earth." Parasara answered, "Listen, Maitreya. I will tell you the family of Manu, which comes down from Brahma. It is said that the family never dies out of the one who remembers it each day. Hearing its origin takes away sins." He began at the beginning. Brahma was born from the world-egg, and he is the form of the supreme Vishnu, who is one with the Rig, Yajur and Sama Vedas. From Brahma's right thumb came the Patriarch Daksha. Daksha's daughter Aditi bore the sun, and from the sun came Manu. Manu had ten sons: Ikshawaku, Nriga, Dwrishta, Saryati, Narishyanta, Pransu, Nabhaga, Nedishta, Karusha and Prishadhra.

Manu wanted children, so he held a sacrifice in honour of Mitra and Varuna. But the priest who led the rite made an error, and the ceremony went wrong. What it produced was a daughter, and her name was Ila. But by the mercy of Mitra and Varuna her sex was changed, and she became a man, who was called Sudyumna. The change did not hold. Under a curse from Siva, Sudyumna became a woman again. In that form she was walking one day near the hermitage of Buddha, the son of the moon. Buddha saw her and was drawn to her, and she bore him a son. The boy was named Pururavas.

After Pururavas was born, the noble Rishis wished to give Sudyumna back his manhood. They prayed to the glorious Vishnu, who is the essence of the four Vedas, of mind, of everything and of nothing, and who is himself the sacrificed male. By his mercy Ila became Sudyumna once more. As a man, Sudyumna had three sons: Utkala, Gaya and Vinata. Because he had once been born a woman, he was given no share of his father's kingdom. Then Vasishtha spoke on his behalf, and Manu gave him the city of Pratishta. Sudyumna passed that city on to Pururavas. The other sons of Manu went different ways. Prishadhra killed a cow, and for that sin he fell to the condition of a Sudra. Karusha's descendants were the Karushas.

Nedistha's son Nabhaga became a Vaisya. His line runs on through many sons: Bhalandana, Vatsapri, Pransu, Prajani, Khanitra, Chakshupa, Vinsa, Vivinsati, Khaninetra and Karandhama, then Avikshit, and then Marutta. Of Marutta people say, "Who else on earth has been able to hold a sacrifice like Marutta's?" Every vessel at it was gold. Indra grew drunk on the Soma, the Brahmans were delighted with their gifts, the winds stood guard and the gods sat as courtiers. The line went on to Trinavindu, who had a daughter, Ilavita. The nymph Alambusha loved him and bore him Visala, who founded the city of Vaisali. Vinata's descendants are counted among these Vaisala kings too, down to Somadatta, who performed the horse sacrifice ten times. Of them it is said, "By the mercy of Trinavindu the kings of Vaisali were long-lived, generous, just and brave."

Saryati had a daughter, Sukanya, and she married Chyavana. Saryati also had a pious son, Anartta. His son Revata ruled the country named Anartta after his father, from his capital Kusasthali. Revata's son was Raivata, also called Kakudmin, the eldest of a hundred brothers. Raivata had a daughter named Revati. He took her to Brahma's world to ask whom she should marry. When he arrived, the Gandharvas Haha and Huha were singing before Brahma, so Raivata waited until they finished. The ages that passed while he listened seemed to him a single moment. When the song ended he bowed low and asked for a fit bridegroom, naming the men he had in mind. Brahma smiled, nodded, and said, "Of those you have named, no trace of their families remains on earth."

Brahma went on, "Many ages passed while you listened to the singers. The twenty-eighth great age of this Manu is nearly over, and Kali is coming. Your friends, ministers, servants, wife, kinsmen, armies and wealth were all taken long ago by Time. You alone are left. Give this jewel of a daughter to someone." Terrified, the king bowed again. "Lord, then to whom shall I give her?" Brahma told him of Vishnu, who has no beginning, middle or end, and who is the world and also dwells within it. "By his mercy I create, Rudra destroys, and Vishnu preserves. He has now come to earth in part. Your city Kusasthali is now called Dwaraka, and a portion of Kesava reigns there as Baladeva. Give her to him. He is a fit bridegroom for her."

Raivata came back to earth and found that people had grown smaller, weaker in body and duller in mind. His own city Kusasthali was greatly changed. There he gave his daughter in marriage to Baladeva, whose chest was as fair and bright as crystal. Baladeva looked at the bride and saw that she stood far taller than other women. He carries a palm tree on his banner, and he carries a plough. With the end of his ploughshare he shortened her. After that she was like any other woman. So Balarama duly married Revati, the daughter of Raivata. Having given his daughter away, the king left for the mountain Himalaya. There he lived in penance, with his mind at rest.
