Highest Command Within

Yoga Sutras 2.55

Meaning · English

Then follows the highest mastery over the sense faculties.

Three words carry the sutra. Tatah means "from that" or "then": it points back to what was just described. Parama means highest, furthest, with nothing beyond it. Vashyata comes from a root meaning to will, and names the state of being obedient, of coming under command. Indriya is a faculty of sense, an instrument like seeing, hearing or touch. So the sutra says that after the senses have been disengaged from outer things, they come fully under the rule of the one who directs them. Patanjali names this because the previous sutra described an act and left its result unnamed. Withdrawal is not an end in itself. Its fruit is that the senses stop dragging the mind from object to object and answer to the mind instead. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it as the result of that withdrawal: once the senses follow the held mind, no separate effort is needed to restrain each one. Later commentators add detail but keep this basic reading. The word "highest" matters. It marks a completed mastery, not a partial one.

A well-trained dog walks beside its owner through a busy street. Smells, squirrels and other dogs pass by, and the lead hangs slack. The dog is not forced; it simply goes where its owner goes. The senses are the dog, and the mind that holds still is the owner they follow.

1. Sit for five minutes today, in a quiet spot, with your eyes closed and your back comfortable. 2. Let each sound and each touch of air arrive without turning toward it. Notice whether attention moves on its own. 3. When it does move, bring it back gently to the breath at the nostrils. Count each return as one, with no scolding. 4. Later in the day, notice once when your eyes or ears pull you away from what you were doing.
